GBAtemp's Reviews
New Super Lucky's Tale is a game right at home on a Nintendo console. Featuring bright and colourful environments in a charming world full of life, it draws you in from the offset for an adventure I enjoyed more than some of Mario's. Though slightly frustrating for its loading times, it puts forward a great debut for the adventurous fox on the Switch, and I can only hope to see more down the line.
Atelier Ryza is a great starting point for the series for those who have yet to bite the bullet. It kicks off a new saga and changes the formula enough to keep veterans of the series interested as well as attract a new crowd. If you're thinking of buying a relaxing JRPG on your console of choice to unwind after a long day, this is the title to pick up.
Tokyo Dark is a solid if underwhelming detective noir story. It's good for a diversion but will ultimately leave you wishing it were something more substantial.
Perhaps I am missing the point here, but nothing was fun, nothing was engaging and everything was painfully boring to watch. This game single-handedly drives home the fact that 360-degree video experiences are not the future of video games, especially when it feels like a hugely amateur production with horrible attention to detail with their own intellectual property.
Luigi's Mansion 3 is a game for everybody. Be you young or old, experienced or otherwise, this game goes beyond to appeal to every type of player. With a great range of puzzles and challenges alongside a series best in gameplay and combat, it is a game I wholeheartedly recommend to any Switch owner, especially in this most spooky of times.
Neo Cab is a chilling cyberpunk story that never loses sight of its character's humanity.
Enjoyably casual gameplay which draws you in an makes you want to do better each time you play.
Children of Morta is an indie game that provides AAA levels of entertainment and polish. With so many genres and influences all mixed up into one big pot, the concept easily could've turned out a disaster in the wrong developer's hands. Instead, Dead Mage studios produced what is arguably a must-play title and an absolute gem of a game. Highly recommended for veteran and novice gamers alike.
A Hat in Time is absolutely worth your time. If you love 3D platformers, and you haven't already played this, for the love of god, please give it a shot. This is one of those games where Switch should be your last choice though, as the concessions made to get it on Switch are a bummer, to say the least.
If you're the kind of gamer who can overlook technical limitations and the occasional glitch or bug as long as the gameplay delivers a unique and fun experience, give The Surge 2 a try. Under its rugged presentation and simple plot the game has a wealth of razor sharp fun in store for you. Mindless fun, to be fair, but isn't that the best kind?
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch was a breath of fresh air in 2013, breathing new life into the dying JRPG genre. This breath still resonates with audiences today and the game holds up in every way. With such a beautiful world, score, characters, and plot, it's hard to find much to hate. Level 5 and Studio Ghibli really knocked it out of the park with this entry.
Sublevel Zero Redux is a fine example of a roguelike game with a brilliantly tight control scheme and striking visual style. Though not without fault, it's a game that drives you to observe and better your knowledge, to in turn understand and enjoy more of what really makes it stand out. I wholeheartedly recommend it to any fans of roguelikes and floaty spaceship goodness.
Code Vein is a brilliant evolution of the soulslike style. With fun combat, a well done AI partner system and a wealth of build options. Each area permeates that distinct desolate feeling, while still managing to remain unique. Even the story manages to keep being interesting enough to continually draw the player forward to discover more, with an elegant system to experience memories of past events to flesh out the story. Anyone who enjoys both anime style games, and soulslike games has plenty to enjoy in Code Vein.
Valfaris is a master class of action, platforming and pacing. Personally I'd love to see these guys use this formula in a Metroidvania.
While I liked this far more than Wildlands it still has a fair way to go before it's as entertaining to play as some of the other shooters out there. It needed more going on; more variety and more spontaneity to take it up a notch and push it towards being an essential purchase. In its current state, it's just not "there" yet.
Whether through loyalty or lethargy, BurgerTime Party! just doesn't do enough with the original arcade game's formula to make this reboot worth checking out.
The Nintendo Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is a great way to (re)discover a once-forgotten Zelda game with a refined gameplay and an audiovisual overhaul, even if its most notable new feature is underwhelming.
If you're into this genre of shooters then you are in for a real treat. This game is poles apart from Call of Duty or Battlefront, and that's a great thing. It's tactical, it's slower-paced and it's incredibly enjoyable to sink into and engage with.
Unlike most studios in the industry which seem to deliver products that consistently fail to meet expectations and the hype, Spiders seems to manage getting better and better with each subsequent release. GreedFall is one of their better titles, if not the best, but it still falls somewhat short of being a truly great game. With that said, it's by no means bad, and it's certainly ambitious. If you find the subject matter intriguing, consider giving it a shot - it has lots to offer in terms of role-playing and storytelling, but fails in other areas.
An enjoyable game but not something that you have to play, it's disappointingly short and has a definite unfinished feel in places. I finished the game in three sittings, in well under five hours combined without really even trying to hammer through it on a moderate difficulty, so seasoned gamers will have this smashed in no time.
