With its updated visuals matching the majority of aesthetically pleasing RPGs on the 3DS (its style heralds Dragon Warrior), Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past gives fans the RPG experience they’ve been searching for while baptizing newer gamers into the Dragon Quest/Warrior family.
The story was laid out into episodes, with some sort of development or twist at the end to launch into the next. It is different with the style of the visuals and far less amount of decisions that would impact the story. The environments for the game flowed very well. Any time I entered an area, I felt I was able to get through it. Nothing felt so impossible that it could not be done. The keys to this game involved patience and being aware of Hope's placement in respect to the guards. How the game integrates the player into becoming a part of the story was different and interesting; rather than just having the players play as Hope, you are helping her and trying to protect her.
This really is a true fighting game; don't let the Pokémon veneer tell you otherwise. This is a game which takes patience and concentration to learn to play effectively, and it successfully manages to blend together elements from other fighters such as Street Fighter, Marvel, and Tekken, and combine them with new ideas to create something truly unique.
Happy Home Designer is a fun way to pass the time. Certainly not a revolutionary game, and certainly not a perfect game, but it's an interesting take on the Animal Crossing series – having zoomed in so closely on just one aspect of the series is a breath of fresh air.
Switching games can be like starting new relationships. Maybe it ended badly, and you want to move on to something fun to help you keep your mind busy and moving forward. Perhaps the interest disappeared and you want to find something different from everything else that is out there. Maybe you are looking for something similar to what you already had, but without the lying to yourself that something isn’t inherently wrong. Perhaps you are keeping your options open until the right one comes along. There is no secret about it, Lords of the Fallen has been around the block this past year. But if you can keep an open mind and accept it for what it really is, you just might be able to enjoy your time with it. While it isn’t the shiniest game out there, you might actually be moved to see the love this game has for the genre.
In all, the game feels like it is the developers testing the waters of ideas, but they pulled from their older games to give something to the long time players of the series.
With clever storytelling, surprisingly engaging characters, and a solid sense of style, Muv-Luv is a fun twist on old tropes that will leave you wanting more. Considering Muv-Luv Alternative is on its way, it might not be too long of a wait.
Ziggurat is not perfect by any means, but it does its job well and provides one hell of a time.
All in all, Splatoon is extremely creative, inventive, and just plain fun.
This game went a lot quicker than I would have expected and did feel easier than the Souls and Bloodborne games. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. For people who are maybe less interested or more wary of the Souls series, this game might be an option to try out. For those who love those series already this game is a fun time spent that could be less grueling than running through the Souls game for another New Game+.
Full Mojo Rampage is an entertaining and successful top-down stick shooter. I found minimal to no mechanical issues, and the game always ran smoothly for me. Controls were tight, and the ability to level up after a death (as well as the options to customize your character stats and weapons) were great.
It's with great pleasure that I say that Age of Decadence is a game I love. I couldn't have been happier to have been given the opportunity to review it. It's a fun, engaging game with a seemingly endless amount of depth, leaving me truly surprised that a team of only six people were able to create it. You can tell that they spent a long time trying to make this game as great and hardcore as it is now. I can't wait to see what they decide to do next.
Headlander doesn’t rise above the genre in every respect, but it honors it and enhances it through clever gameplay and inventive new mechanics. It succeeds because it adds a wonderful new spin to the action-adventure side-scroller while maintaining a distinct aesthetic and personality. It’s quirky and fun with a big dose of silly humor. Fans of the genre shouldn’t miss it.
On the whole, I would recommend Seasons After Fall to anyone looking for another pretty indie platformer. Seasons After Fall certainly holds its own (minus the glitches) against other favorites within the genre, but doesn’t do enough to truly surpass its counterparts. Still, it can be quite calming and engaging for a short period of time and is certainly worth the playthrough for anyone looking for a new platformer.
Children of Arkham does a great job at building and expanding the characters, while also developing not only the plot against Gotham but also the Wayne family storyline. There’s a major reveal near the episode’s conclusion that is going to have serious repercussions for Bruce Wayne, and it’ll be interesting to see how both the public and Bruce react to the revelation.
Sunless Sea far surpassed any expectations I had laid out prior. The rich lore and exposition of its game play and narrative intertwine with its massive map to create a powerful web of content. To add to that, the method in which the game is structured allows the player to experience hours of content; and this isn’t your random claim of ‘at least thirty hours of gameplay!’
If you're interested in an emotionally charged puzzler for less than $20 (before tax), then NERO (Nothing Ever Remains Obscure) could be a solid buy.
N++ is an unabashedly punishing game with tight controls, great level design, and enough content to last for ages. The momentum-based platforming provides a wide array of challenges sure to satisfy fans of the genre. If you're on the fence, just remember that you get to play as a ninja.
NHL 16 is leaps and bounds improved from last year's title. While all of the returning game modes are warmly welcomed, it can come off as a cheap marketing ploy to take them away in the first place, only to reinstate them as a selling point. The feel of the game replicates a more authentic simulation in both look and gameplay.
There aren't too many complaints with Stasis. It's a short game with some pace issues and it may only see play once. However, the game is filled with so much ambiance it's worth playing through it. The grimy narrative, alongside the excellent visuals and sound design, will have players writhe forward through the mysteries of the Groomlake to discover John's fate aboard the dead ship.
