Bit Cultures's Reviews

When I look back at my pained time with Homefront: The Revolution, I can't help but shudder. I feel dirty even suggesting this game wasted its own potential; I can't be certain potential was lurking behind this shoddy façade to begin with. In fact, I'm not sure I've ever played a game as unpolished and trashy as Homefront: The Revolution.

If I could remove the poorly executed boss battles from the story mode, Devil's Third could have been a passable, albeit paltry, game. And while the multiplayer doesn't offer anything new and isn't overly populated, it can be fun for additional hours of gameplay. Your best bet is to wait for the game to fall in price before picking it up.

A good centre, but the rest of it makes it not worthwhile.

Miaou Moon is not a terrible game. It’s a cute, silly game about a bouncing, guffing space cat with some fun aspects and gameplay. Both the developers are very active on steam and itch, releasing new updates and improving the game.

A slow-moving pace and undemanding platforming might be a draw to the more brain-addled gamer, perhaps enduring a slow-moving Sunday afternoon or a comedown from a particularly Red Bull-heavy Friday night. Nevertheless, there's still an aching sense of potential behind Miku's adventure that will leave you thinking what could've been. As it is, Submerged is pretty forgettable, and sinks rather than swims in the wake of other superior indie journeys. Journey in particular.

A 2D top-down boss rush game with a bunch of cool multiplayer modes is a really good idea, but Knight Squad is not a good execution on that idea. The game misses the mark on several key aspects of gameplay creating a really unappealing mess of a game, even for $14.99.

50% - Zenith
Oct 14, 2016

As a game, Zenith functions just enough to play. Its sloppy controls and buggy mechanics coupled with its sound issues and childish dialogue leave what little hope the story had to offer lost.

Western Press is fun, but only for a short while. The mechanics are every bit as simple as they sound, and no amount of customization can really change that. Some of the modes and options result in an unbalanced difficulty, which is particularly damning for a game that has so little content from the get go.

Cross of the Dutchman is certainly an interesting idea. Stories based on historical figures, particularly man-made legends are always fascinating areas to explore in the realm of gaming. However, the experience is plagued by overly simplistic controls and a lack of flair that makes everything feel plain and uninteresting. The frustration caused by their inconsistency often overshadows the redeeming qualities that the game does have, such as score and writing. It leaves one asking if this needed to be a game rather than a short animated movie.

I almost feel bad talking about this game. Call it a guilty conscience, but This is the Police drew me in with its narrative speaking throughout the story. I will say that those parts were well written and at least mildly intriguing. But the actual game part failed to keep me engaged.

Tom vs. the Armies of Hell is a jumble of failed and successful attempts at a game. For $12.99, the price seems a little steep for the myriad problems I ran across. The difficulty and alleged skill involved in completing this game may be worth it for some who enjoy a hard time, and there is an easy mode for those who just want to experience the entertaining story.

My time spent with Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor wasn’t always spectacular, and I often found myself not wanting to continue in my quest to un-curse myself and escape the daily redundancies of being a spaceport janitor.

Mafia III is the type of game that fuels arguments about the lack of artistry and innovation found in today's AAA titles. It's plenty competent, with lots of content and functional game mechanics, but it's safe and repetitive and often feels like it's just going through the motions.

61% - Valley
Aug 24, 2016

Valley is a game of strong fundamentals that is mired by the execution of its grander ideas. Though it never comes together into a cohesive whole, it sometimes rises above the sum of its parts. I enjoyed playing it despite its issues, and I believe that Blue Isle Studios has a wonderful game in their future.

The gameplay itself is fun if a bit uninspired. The narrative stumbles from the starting blocks until the finish line, finding itself in more embarrassing scenarios as it progresses. With mission lengths falling terribly short and being the very definition of redundant, there isn’t much value to be had outside of the gameplay. It’s a sad cycle to see the Hyperdimension series fall into; it has officially become what it set out to satirize.

Conception II isn’t ground-breaking with what it brings to the JRPG table. You will certainly find more polished turned-based games out there, but if you are looking for something in the same vein as the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games that you can complete quickly, then Conception II could be an option to fill the time.

really wanted to love Doki-Doki, and maybe I did for a while, but I'm glad that it's over. It was different — a good kind of different even — but I'd be lying if I said it didn't bore me every step of the way.

For $19.99, the HD Remaster of Resident Evil 5 is probably worth your money. The game comes with all released DLC and game modes, so the value of gameplay per dollar is pretty nice. Resident Evil 5 isn’t a terrible game by any stretch, but time could be spent doing any number of other things, including purchasing/playing a game that you actually enjoy.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst has some great concepts going for it that are ultimately being held back by technical issues. I can't help but feel these could have been worked out. With no real multiplayer component, the single player experience needs to be wholly satisfying. Unfortunately, this game is way more frustrating than fun.
