10 / 10.0 - Dark Souls III
Apr 3, 2016

Dark Souls III is not for everyone, but for those that do give it the time required that it takes to learn, they’ll hopefully walk away from the game satisfied like I did. Because what they’ll end up playing is one of the best games of this year.

Simply put, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the best launch title I've ever played. It's captivated me more than any game with a system launch, and it's rocketed straight into number one on my all-time favourite Zelda games. You could play it on Wii U, where it's still a fantastic game — clearly the best on the console. But it's that little bit more special to have such an amazing, massive game on a handheld system. Wherever you play, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was worth the wait.

10 / 10.0 - Resident Evil 2

The traditions of survival horror have been modernised, resulting in something that's all-too-familiar yet always manages to keep you on your toes.

10 / 10.0 - Control
Aug 26, 2019

Control shows not only Remedy’s growth as a studio, but studio head Sam Lake’s as a writer, building and greatly expanding upon concepts started in Alan Wake and flirted with in Quantum Break.

10 / 10.0 - Tell Me Why
Aug 28, 2020

While Tell Me Why may draw people in because of a transgender character, it offers far more than just that. It presents a complex, psychological narrative that doesn’t use minorities as mere tools to shortcut emotional responses from its players. Take note.

Alan Wake Remastered is a remasterpiece. I caught myself audiably saying, “man, I love this game” over and over while playing. I’ve dipped back in to Alan Wake’s American Nightmare to continue on, and I have a feeling I’ll be scheduling another replay of Control when this silly season quiets down. Remedy’s universe has captured my heart; Remastered certainly holds its own in 2021, but also serves as an impressive reminder of how far the studio has grown since 2010.

10 / 10.0 - Forza Horizon 5
Nov 4, 2021

Overall, this is a Forza Horizon game in every sense of the word, and shows off the best of what Horizon can be. It’s fun, only structured if you want it to be, and seems to exist purely to make sure you have a good time.

If you already own Rise on Xbox One or PC, there's no reason to buy it again. The new content is absolute crap and neither the additional skins, nor the included DLC warrant buying this game again. That being said, the core game remains excellent in almost every way; if you're solely a PS4 owner, now is your time to experience the next chapter in Lara's epic tail.

Andromeda is superb, easily jettisoning Ryder and crew ahead of Commander Shepard and his team.

9.5 / 10.0 - XCOM 2
Oct 4, 2016

XCOM 2 is not more XCOM, but better XCOM. It will make you feel like the original may not have been the great game you thought it was, and for me that is all I can ask of a sequel. XCOM fans will not be disappointed, nor will any gamer with an affinity for strategy and tactical games who somehow missed Enemy Unknown. A brilliant game.

9.5 / 10.0 - Battlefield 1
Oct 17, 2016

Battlefield 1 is the definitive Battlefield game not only of this generation, but this decade. By focusing on moments and emotional realism, rather than a continuous campaign, it’s crafted the best single-player experience of any Battlefield game, and backs it up with stellar multiplayer. Operations is the best addition in years, and the returning favourites suit the World War I theme to a tee. Now, I’m off to attempt to land a plane on the airship and take it down from the inside. That’s possible, right?

9.5 / 10.0 - BoxBoy! + BoxGirl!
Apr 25, 2019

Despite the move to Switch, levels are still designed in a handheld console mentality, meaning you’ll be able to get through a level in a couple minutes flat; as such, BoxBoy remains perfectly suited for pick-up, put-down play.

9.5 / 10.0 - The Outer Worlds
Oct 23, 2019

The Outer Limits has something for everyone — like intricately designed RPGs that have come before it, I found myself plotting my next moves while at work or even playing hockey, desperate to get back into its world and continue my journey.
