8 / 10.0 - A Bastard's Tale
Jul 7, 2015

Hard but satisfying – if you put in the time to get good, that is.

A foray into the silly, ridiculous, and formulaic, Van Helsing delivers B-movie cheese on a bland action RPG cracker.

It has detective bits, it has crime fighting bits and it has creepy bits - just like a good Batman comic. Playing this makes you realise how much work goes into being Batman, the focus and commitment that Bruce Wayne shows, his willingness to do whatever it takes to save the day... It's not a perfect game, but it's a perfect Batman game.

1.5 / 10.0 - Hatred

A "suicide-by-cop simulator" of the same level as the abominable Ethnic Cleaning.

Overall Carmageddon: Reincarnation fails in almost every way to be an enjoyable revisit to arcade style racing mixed with running over pedestrians. The game is a hassle to start, not optimized, and no fun whatsoever.

4 / 10.0 - Omega Quintet

A great battle system and the ultimate in the sheer amount of customisation features, hampered by a metric-butt-ton of boring dialogue, dragging cutscenes which are boring to watch and boring characters.

A huge open world, filled to the brim with life, death and everything in between. It truly is a sight to behold. CD Projekt Red have done great things with this title and RPGs all-round should take note.

6.5 / 10.0 - Project Root

A fun little shoot-em-up with an interesting twist, but only if you're not really interested in a story line and just want to pop some bad guys when you have a bit of down-time.

Excellent visuals, music, and sound. Sadly, the inconsistency in its mechanics makes playing feel very discontinuous, where the music never fully gets hold of the player.

A fun, quirky art style? Check. Enjoyable mechanics and satisfying animations? Check. Four-player co-op? Check. It's difficult to give the game an especially high score, no matter how much I enjoyed it, but rest assured that if you're looking for a small title to fill some time with friends - or you're a fan of the genre as a whole - then it's well worth a look.

A heady mix of expansive story, engrossing combat and silky gameplay makes Knights of Pen and Paper 2 a must for RPG fans looking for adventures on the go.

Strongly focussed on relationship building between the main characters, the somewhat simpler puzzles and return of previous problems bring it down.

There's a reason NecroDancer holds a place in the hearts of the many people who played it before its final release: it's an incessantly charming indie game that can eat up hours and leaves an impression long after you've shut it down for the day.

9 / 10.0 - Endless Legend

While the AI in Endless Legend is rather lackluster the rest of the game provides a fresh perspective on the RTS/4X genre.

I think that the game does a great job at bringing in action-oriented PvP, so you will surely like this game. It's a nice introduction to the MOBA world if you've never played one, but it also offers enough for hardcore MOBA players too.

9 / 10.0 - Invisible Inc.

This game's turn-based stealth mechanics are perfect in every way, unforgiving and challenging. However, it's sad to see a game almost nailing it due to the roguelike campaign, which feels lazy and incomplete.

5 / 10.0 - BRAWL

Brawl could have been a fun party game with a sinister tone but it falters at too many steps. The gameplay can be fun but the slow pace of it requires a lot of patience and forward thinking from the player. The campaign is disappointing and other party games do a much better job than Brawl making the online options commendable but sadly irrelevant. Unfortunately Brawl is one party game that isn't a blast to play.

10 / 10.0 - Chroma Squad

Great subject, humour and gameplay meet charming music and graphics to make magic. It may be a little too easy for hardcore tactical buffs, but for me this game is perfect.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood still retains all the satisfying gameplay that made The New Order one of the best shooters of 2014. It's not as long as the original; lasting around 4-5 hours, but it does include a decent challenge mode to increase longevity. For £14.99 digitally it's worth it for a nice afternoon of killing some Nazis.

Overall, Hotline Miami 2 may suffer at some points due to it's level design, but when it gets good, it becomes astoundingly good. It's still the same top-down f*ck them up but only bigger, longer and more brutal. And certainly a must for players of the first, even if it is for the soundtrack alone.
