The Games Machine's Reviews

Nov 8, 2017

The acclaimed Nioh marks its debut on PC without any particular accomplishment or novelties: the PC version, that includes the three previously released DLCs, can either be defined "pure" or "lazy", depending on your point of view. The game is exactly the same we already appreciated on PS4, including the lack of support for mouse and keyboard.

Brave New World keeps on telling the events "before the storm" on Arcadia Bay in a puerile way, exceeding in talking about drugs and homosexuality without going deep in the facts. Let's hope for a change in the next, last episode of the series.

Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is a pretty basic horror title, with a creepy and disturbing atmosphere, and an interesting bestiary. The game is not too difficult, the super-deformed art direction is a little bit anticlimactic, but overall is a good scary ride.

AER Memories of Old is a pretty basic adventure title, with simple puzzles and no real action elements. You can expect a relaxing experience spanning a couple of hours, with some intriguing ideas, a distinctive personality and some touching moments.

The game offers nothing more than some good animal visuals. What remains is a management game without any challenge and spoiled by an awful UI.

The new Need for Speed has some serious problems that need to be addressed: mainly, the over-use of loot boxes (and microtransactions) and a broken progression system that relies too much on randomness and grinding. The story is cringeworthy, full of bidimensional characters and annoying catch-phrases. All that being said, the arcade driving model is accessible and extremely fun as always, and the open world is pretty big and full of activities that can keep the player engaged for a long time. Oh, and you're gonna spend a lot of time in the garage pimping your ride.

8 / 10.0 - Wuppo
Nov 6, 2017

Wuppo is the kind of game you kinda want to remove from your memory, just to be able to play it again, and enjoy it like the first time. Despite its childish graphics and some gameplay flaws, Wuppo is a truly entertaining, light-hearted experience.

The Frozen Wilds expands the Horizon Zero Dawn's gameplay driven philosophy to a brand new area, packed with tons of action and a new questline. The DLC offers a solid 10 hours more of the same experience, while Guerrilla Game's open world still shines after nine months in terms of breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay.

8.6 / 10.0 - Call of Duty: WWII
Nov 3, 2017

It's been a few years since a Call of Duty this good. The single player campaign is strong, spectacular and gripping (but it could have dared a little bit more); the new War and Headquarters modes are a welcome addition to the series that will please newcomers as well as fans of the series, and the Zombie mode is funnier than ever.

Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon improves over the predecessor in every possible way, from the more refined gameplay to a more inspired story and art direction. There are some technical issues, and the game is not available in the Italian language. Other than that, a pretty good RPG-musou.

6.3 / 10.0 - Numantia
Oct 30, 2017

Despite the nerve to tell a little-known - but fascinating - story, and some good ideas in the managerial department, Numantia suffers from a general lack of polish, mostly from the low-budget production. The combat system is still pretty good, and a challenging one. If you love history and hexagons that mix strategy and RPG, Numantia could be worth a chance.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a critical success on a persuasion test. At first, you can only feel enthusiasm in the face of such a majestic work, yet as the effects of the test begin to disappear you realize that something is wrong. With his latest effort, Larian Studios does everything a role-playing enthusiast would like from its ideal title, except to create an engaging and compelling story. This and a few problems too much in the balance of the combat system prevent Original Sin 2 from establishing itself at the top of the genre, while still remaining a great product.

The Shadow of War offers a solid gameplay, a compelling concept and a much more varied setting than the previous episode, with excellent production values and an awesome soundtrack. The sequel is bigger, better and stronger, but somehow caged in a repetitive framework. The game is full of good ideas and potential, that cannot be truly fulfilled due to a storytelling without personality and a huge but boring endgame.

9 / 10.0 - Cuphead
Oct 2, 2017

Cuphead is a small, wonderful gem (albeit not a long one), with a truly unique art direction and a real challenging difficulty. It's not for everyone, but it will be an absolute joy for whomever is willing to take up the challenge.

8.7 / 10.0 - FIFA 18
Sep 29, 2017

FIFA 18 improves the previous game in every aspect, with the Frostbite engine which takes animation and physics to a brand new level of quality. The gameplay is fun and lets you play a wonderful offensive football, while the new full manual defense is quite harsh to manage. Overall, the game offers a huge and deep football experience, thanks to a solid single player (with the new Career mode and the awesome second season of The Journey) and endless multiplayer action.

Death of the Outside is almost an expansion rather than a trivial additional content, perfectly reflecting the expectations of enthusiasts. Always excellent gameplay, flanked by a story perhaps a little too hasty.

6.8 / 10.0 - Fragments of Him
Sep 27, 2017

Fragments of Him is a walking simulator that tells the story of Will, a bisexual young man worried about falling into the routine and dying in a car accident. The storytelling takes place indirectly, through monologues on staggered timelines and recited by people who have been more intimate. A narrative at times exceptional and exciting, but spoiled by a technical realization closer to the demos of the indie scene.

7.4 / 10.0 - Absolver
Sep 25, 2017

Absolver offers a truly unique take on the combat genre, with a peculiar mix between single and multiplayer. Technically solid and visually inspired, it suffers from a sometimes confused level design and the absence of a real, high-level endgame.

9.2 / 10.0 - NBA 2K18
Sep 21, 2017

A new defensive approach, a new mode and a bunch of fixes are just a few of the spearheads of NBA 2K18, a game that's very easy to learn, but very very difficult to master indeed. The best title of the series without any doubt, and one of the best sports titles published thus far.

7.8 / 10.0 - Windjammers
Sep 18, 2017

The PS4 version of Windjammers is a perfect replica of the legendary Neo Geo game, with the added bonus of the online multiplayer. It still stands the test of time, but it's best played with some friends over a couple of drinks.
