Agatha Knife is like the South Park of Point-and-Click games, a cartoon aesthetic with very dark and adult themes. Mechanics-wise, the game is rather simplistic and very easy to pick up, but the solutions to the problems will certainly make you think. I love the fact that there are multiple ways to solve most of the obstacles in your way as well as tonnes of interaction points which expand on the brilliantly written narrative. There's never a dull moment, even when you're walking around due to a lack of fast travel.
If I was able to award a game more than a perfect score, AI: The Somnium Files would be one of the few which would easily break the barrier. Everything from the brilliantly scripted narrative adventure, to the frustratingly fun time-management Somnium segments, are beyond what I was expecting. I couldn’t stop playing until I had the platinum trophy on my account, which I achieved at around fifty hours, very few games grasp me like that yet the humour and narrative direction drew me in and had me hooked instantly. I don’t think I’ve played a game this generation (bar the Zero Escape remasters) which changes the storyline, interactions and outcomes quite as much as I experienced within AI: The Somnium Files – this game is a masterpiece and needs to be played by all fans of Spike Chunsoft and Kotaro Uchikoshi.
Whether you’re a fan of the game and have followed Clementine from the very beginning, or if you’ve never actually played any of the games before, The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series is by far the best version of the game to pick up today. Sure, you can purchase previous versions, but this one stands out above the rest with all of the fan content and beautifully horrific visuals.
Gun Gun Pixies is a very energetic third-person shooter which is unlike anything you’ve ever played before. When you’re not shooting Squids which look like they have condoms on their heads, you’ll be delivering pleasure to giant girls as you shoot your load all over their face and boobs, watching the in-game physics cause various body parts to wobble upon impact. Then, after a hard day of pleasuring the girls in the dorm whilst avoiding eye-contact, it’s time to jump into the bath and fondle their giant fancies until your out of bullets and end up firing blanks! This is a very strange game, yet it’s oddly satisfying and the twelve-hour story captivated me and kept me hooked – that and the giant panties!
In the grand scheme of things, a few remaining balancing concerns that the developers already stated would be addressed in future if they remained too prominent, a few odd choices with equipment that may only last as long as until the first title update shakes everything up again for all we know, and some extra, decently varied grind added onto the game when we’ve already had to live through the hell of Kulve Taroth, do very little to detract from the fact that the core of Iceborne is an incredibly solid Monster Hunter offering. If Monster Hunter: World was ambitious, financially extremely successful, but still quite flawed experiment at a new direction for the series, then Iceborne is certainly one hell of a follow-up act. It certainly got me, who was just about ready to give up on the franchise, to feel some hope for what’s to come once more.
Remnant: From the Ashes is a thrilling and enjoyable co-op game which I really enjoyed playing with my friends as we fought off enemy mob groups together, although I feel like the scaling system is a little off and could use some improvements/adjustments. I also found the navigation within the game a bit confusing as I found myself getting a bit lost at times with little advice on what to do next. However, I was very delighted to see that Remnant: From the Ashes focuses on the story whilst also procedurally generated the levels to keep things fresh and free from repetition. Well, the story stays the same but the land is randomly generated each time and whichever boss you end up facing is the luck of the draw!
If you’re looking for a casual game to wind down with that’ll take you around five hours (maybe more if using a controller or trying to get all the trophies on other platforms), Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise will easily fill that void for you. Everyone of all ages will enjoy it, nobody will find it too hard, and even those who are avid puzzle fans will find a few of the solutions thought-provoking.
It’s really hard to find fault with Sairento VR. Yeah, its story is a bit meh and it can take a long time to find some games on multiplayer at the moment due to a modest player base, but the game is just so damn fun. The combination of movement abilities, weapons and skills create a seemingly limitless platform for you to jump into some pretty Japanese environments and make them bloody, having the best time VR can offer while you do so. If the endless killing and cinematic action doesn’t keep you playing, for sure the deep progression and loot systems will as it gives a sense of accomplishment to go along with your desire to be an expert armed-to-the-teeth ninja.
Control is easily one of the most enjoyable and technologically advanced games I’ve played this year. Although Jesse may only have one thing in mind, find her brother and get out of there alive, upon being appointed the new director of The Oldest House, things change. Not only have you now been appointed with the responsibility of all of the employees who haven’t succumb to the Hiss, but you must also find the source of this evil and stop it with all of your might – something you never thought you’d be tasked with when you woke up this morning. Using multiple powers, upgraded weaponry and abilities, and the help of loyal NPCs, you must take control of your destiny and show these evil intruders that they’re fired!
Don’t let the shortness or lack of challenge of Hamsterdam: Paws of Justice prevent you from playing this rather excellent little brawler. I enjoyed every minute of my adventure with Pimm, helping to defeat Marlo and his Vermin Gang, and restore peace and tranquillity to Hamsterdam. Pimm is an adorable little hero that packs a mean punch. Fingers crossed for a sequel where he could potentially be joined by his Grandpa for some intense co-op hamster-fu action!
Shadows 2: Perfidia was an interesting game to play because there was a lot of good things which I really enjoyed, yet there was a number of negative aspects as well. You can clearly see that the developers wanted to make an interesting and scary game, which I feel was accomplished perfectly as they managed to make me jump a few times even though I’m almost immune to jump scares at this point! The graphics do feel a bit dated, although the small screen of the Switch does help to hide this a little, and although the enemies terrify you as you’re being chased, they do look rather funny if you see a still image of them.
If you love the fun side of driving games (smashing into the other vehicles and watching them bleed oil), then Wreckfest is for you! With its diverse event-types ranging from a standard demolition derby to crazy Sofa-racing, there’s so much more to the game than simply crashing into other cars, it’s all about strategically timing your offensive whilst remaining on the defensive as one hit too many will result in you knocking yourself out of the competition. The main Championships should last you many hours as you try furiously to not only come first in every event but also complete all of the challenge missions as well. Plus, there are countless hours of fun to be had within the Custom Events and Multiplayer – I just wished the game had local split-screen multiplayer.
Despite a few minor issues and annoyances I had with the controls, Ancestors Legacy is one of the best RTS games I’ve played on any console with its interesting narratives, satisfying combat and accessible nature. Working your way through all eight campaigns should take you at least fifty hours if you play on the correct difficulty for your skill level; with the skirmish and multiplayer boosting your playtime even more, should you wish to play solo or with friends. Although some aspects of the game may not be historically accurate, the developers have done a great job at transporting you to the various time periods with visually stunning locations.
I can’t stress enough how much fun Friday the 13th: The Game Ultimate Slasher Edition is. Each round you play online is unique from the last one, offering hours of replayability and exciting experiences. I don’t know how many times I would sit down to play the game and find myself saying “Ok, just one more round” multiple times as my wife would yell at me to go to bed – “Oh, I’m sorry dear, I’m just decapitating counsellors because they suck!!”. The Nintendo Switch version of the game is great as it has all the DLC and you can play it on the go.
I love games with quirky mechanics and a unique spin on solving the puzzles, two aspects I feel The Great Perhaps shines in. If you’re looking for a short experience with memorable characters, interesting puzzles, and really cool visual effects, check out this game once it launches on the 14th August 2019.
Although it has a few key-mechanics missing, Bear with Me: The Complete Collection is a well designed and presented noir-based Point-and-Click Adventure game. I can overlook the omitted mechanics due to both the story and the art direction keeping me hooked right until the final credit roll, despite the fact that there were no trophies to obtain whilst playing out the final act. I personally thought the story and gameplay was more fun and solid within the prequel, as it was the final element created in the collection, but the original trio of chapters delivered a very interesting story which took a rather strange turn towards the final conclusion. My final thoughts and the outcome I got from playing through this series was that I want more Ted E. Bear – I really hope we get to see more of him in the future via a sequel or maybe a spin-off title.
Rise of Insanity is so confusing, I couldn’t stop playing until I finished it but I can’t say that it’s because I really enjoyed it. There are some really good scares in the game but there’s not enough tension or atmosphere. The story is gripping and the files you find are really interesting, but it eventually disappoints. There are better horror games out there but this is overall a pretty solid offering and I can see the talent the studio has.
Despite not being the most original horror game out there, Silver Chains is a nice combination of tropes from various influences. It may not the most inspiring story in a game, but what it lacks in that, it makes up with decent visuals and some good jump scares. Normally most jump scares don’t get me, but there are a few in Silver Chains that got me to jump and say words I shouldn’t say in front of my innocent children! I personally want to give kudos to Cracked Heads Games – I encountered some issues whilst playing the game pre-release yet they were able to fix them immediately, ensuring the final version which went live today runs great for everyone with no progress-blocking occurrences.
Solo: Islands of the Heart stands out as one of the only games I can think of which alters it's narrative towards your own personal experiences. As such, it was really interesting to play through and receive a personalised story at the end which was built around my past situations and feelings towards an old relationship. If this was it, I would be happy with it, but it's not – there's also a lot of clever puzzles which require you to think and perform a lot of trial and error in order to solve.
Whilst Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a terrific game and will keep you entertained for a number of hours, I don’t think the game is worth the £34.99 price tag and I would recommend waiting for a price drop before you buy. When you think that you can purchase Hollow Knight for half that price, it’s more impressive visually and you can easily plough 60+ hours into the game, then I feel that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, with its lack of polish, should have therefore been priced much more reasonably at no more than £25. I’m minded to say that you are paying more for the fact that the game is produced by Igarashi than its true worth. I’ll conclude by saying that, quite simply, for fans of the Castlevania series or classic Metroidvania games, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is an essential purchase.
