It would be easy to dismiss Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare as a quick cash-in on a popular franchise, especially when one considers the somewhat questionable response to Plants vs Zombies 2 and its pricing structure. Fans of the shooting genre might be tempted to overlook this title because of the cute design, but they would be doing themselves a disservice in doing so. Given the quality of the content and the sheer fun of the gameplay, the asking price for Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is more than reasonable and makes for one of the best Xbox One titles released to date.
I can't get enough of Dynasty Warriors games, and Xtreme Legends is immediately my favourite PlayStation 4 game. The sheer weight of content that is packed into the game can't be overstated; this is a big, chunky game that demands a lot of time to work all the way through it, but every step of the way is a truly entertaining one.
Ground Zeroes is an interesting game to score. The way that it has been presented is to show off the features of the FOX Engine, and each mission is clearly designed to showcase some new gimmick or other. And yet, it doesn't feel like a demo. Although I do feel the main mission is too short, it feels like a stand-alone experience that will connect to something much greater in the future. My only gripes with Ground Zeroes, a prequel, is its length, so you can only imagine the game changer The Phantom Pain will be.
TowerFall harkens back to the day when you could play a game like GoldenEye 007, when the person next to you got punched in the shoulder for besting you. This is a game with plenty of laughing and pointing at the screen. TowerFall is not deep in options or features, but the frentic gameplay makes for a surprisingly fun time with your friends and family.
Between the permadeath aspect, the random floor layouts of the dungeon and the smooth gameplay with retro style graphics, Quest of Dungeons is a blast to repeatedly play through.
Despite being a wonderful mix of eclectic and refreshing ideas, Cloudbuilt's difficulty relegates it as a hard sell to all but the most dedicated speedrunners and challenge gamers. It's most definitely a game where fun has to be earned and there are no cinematics to make the average gamer feel empowered. Instead, prepare to fall off the edge of the world over and over until you finally develop the skill to enjoy this game for what it is.
I used to think that the joy of exploration and unbridled sense of discovery was lost to the games of consoles past, but Fez has not only proven me completely wrong, but it has given me hope for the future.
It's not that the game fails to offer something compelling; I sit there and take any individual piece of what went on in Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright, and I liked it. It's just that the attempt to mesh two very different kinds of games together without any real attempt to adjust how either plays simply doesn't work as well as it should on paper.
You can debate whether the formula is old or simply tried and true, but for me it was a great way to spend some time with one of my favourite stories.
[I]f you are looking for lots of action set against a deep space backdrop, Strike Suit Zero: Director's Cut should scratch that itch effectively as long as it lasts.
At this present point in time, Goat Simulator is simply not worth it, even for the novelty value. I imagine some of the sillier YouTubers could get some fun out of it, and for the rest of us that will probably be the better way to experience the extreme silliness of the concept. But I need to underscore; it's just not worth it.
There's not much else I can say that I haven't already said in my review of the PlayStation 3 game. This was always a great game, but the improved visuals and social features, as well as the additional content that Square Enix continues to add into the game, is enough for me to happily say that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has become my favourite MMO. It's well worth the subscription fee.
Warlock 2 is an incredible well crafted game that is easy to bury hours into. Like any other good strategy game it can take some time to find the right strategy that will suit your play style, but that process of discovery is what makes these games so enticing.
Moebius: Empire Rising is a refreshing experience and well worth the time. If only there were more adventure games of this ilk.
Still, it's not hard to recommend Trials Fusion, especially to longtime fans of the series. I can't say it comes as much of a shock that RedLynx was not able to match the refinements from the previous outing, but even with its flaws and shortcomings, you shouldn't be worry about giving this one a go. Trials Fusion is a worthy addition to the series, even if it isn't the complete package we were hoping for.
Dark Souls 2 offers glimpses of hope and illumination, but they always feel just out of reach. Scratching just below the surface to take on the challenges Dark Souls 2 has for you is where this game's appeal lies. The game will not be for everyone, but for those willing to tackle this game, it is a rewarding experience.
Laden with meaning (and in future articles on Digitally Downloaded I'll be writing plenty more about that meaning in the weeks, if not years to come, I suspect), this game uses poetry as its basis and executes on that vision so well that it is, effectively, interactive poetry.
All in all, Daylight was a bit of a disappointment. Let it be said that it's utterly terrifying and will likely scare even the hardiest of players, but ultimately the experience feels a little shallow. The overall game is let down by a lack of variation and a thin narrative, feeling like one missed opportunity after another. Daylight isn't the definitive horror experience we've been waiting for. It's more like a spooky campfire story: it'll make you jump on the first time, but it doesn't have much lasting appeal.
Souvenir Circ.'s Croixleur Sigma offers a blazing fast hack-and-slash game play style that offers just enough complexity to suck you into its colourful world. While its appeal might be limited, it's still good fun in short sessions - just make sure you've got a good controller handy!
The level of storytelling once it makes it past the more clunky moments makes the whole experience worthwhile. The conclusion itself made me forgive the game for all the awkward moments that came before it. And, after playing through all five chapters in quick succession, I can guarantee that that is the best way to appreciate the overall narrative.
