Thanks to its captivating atmosphere, dialogue, and pair of antiheroes, it can also draw in newcomers—though they should be aware that the game design and combat system simply belong to a different era. So if you’re looking for a gothic, dark action-adventure game with an emphasis on story and don’t mind older-style mechanics, you can’t go wrong with Defiance. But if you’re expecting a modern pace, seamless player guidance, and varied combat, you probably won’t be entirely thrilled by this trip down memory lane.

Nicholas Fouts’ project, titled ChainStaff, is a treat that fans of 2D games won’t be able to resist. The game offers everything a proper platformer should have. Thanks to its retro graphics inspired by the 1970s and 1980s, it delivers an adrenaline-fueled experience that will keep you entertained for several evenings. Although it’s a game that will often keep you entertained, its quality is undermined by its low difficulty. As the levels progress, it no longer challenges the player’s skills but instead offers the chance to relax and enjoy moments of peace and quiet. On the other hand, it offers a fresh setting with a supposedly funny story and a New Game+ mode that lets you experience three different endings. If you like wild games with a slightly offbeat style and fast pace, don’t hesitate to give ChainStaff a try. It’s exactly the kind of game that isn’t ashamed of its absurdity.

Flotsam takes the bleak theme of the post-apocalypse and transforms it into a colorful, hopeful, and creative voyage. It offers a unique combination of building strategy and survival, set in a fresh aquatic environment. Although it may suffer from repetitive gameplay and minor technical glitches in the later stages due to the city’s large scale, its relaxing gameplay and the satisfying feeling of cleaning up the ocean more than make up for it. For anyone who has ever dreamed of building their own world on the water and letting themselves drift with the current, this is a must-play.

The PC version of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is undoubtedly a success, and I wouldn’t hesitate to call it the best port Sony has ever created. The game runs smoothly even in the most demanding scenes with ray tracing enabled, and I didn’t encounter any crashes or bugs. Add to that the new content and support for widescreen monitors, and you get a port that’s anything but commonplace these days. Some players might be surprised by minor details, such as holding your breath with the Alt key, but this is just a minor quirk that you can easily change. Nine and a half out of ten.

For fans of the original movie, Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! will be one of the best games ever based on the film. For younger players, this might feel like the Stone Age of cinema, but that doesn’t change the fact that the game delivers solid, adrenaline-fueled action and a great shooting experience. The bugs outnumber you, and each soldier has only a short lifespan. Plenty of Easter eggs and the return of Casper Van Dien are the icing on the cake. The limited content and short playtime are a bit of a letdown, but this is offset by a fair price and the fact that the game doesn’t fall into a rut. Plus, the bonus missions against the bugs are absolutely awesome.

As it stands, Jump Space is a diamond in the rough. It has an absolutely fantastic foundation, addictive gameplay, and cooperative mechanics that are among the best in the genre. If you have a group of friends who love sci-fi and don’t mind occasionally having to restart a mission due to a glitch, you’ll enjoy dozens of hours of great fun. However, if you’re looking for a perfectly polished product with endless content, you’d be better off waiting a little longer. For me personally, though, even at this stage, it’s one of the most interesting space experiences of the year, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the developers take it.

Darwin’s Paradox! isn’t a game that tries to impress at all costs. It doesn’t bring about a revolution; it doesn’t try to rewrite the rules of the genre. Instead, it does something completely different: it takes a familiar and tried-and-true foundation and builds upon it to create its own unique experience, featuring an original take on an octopus as the main character. It relies on its concept, atmosphere, and attention to detail. It lets you explore, lets you think, and occasionally even makes you smile without you even realizing it.

In terms of gameplay, however, it doesn’t offer much, and it can start to get boring after playing for a while. Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is a fascinating trip down memory lane that will delight not only die-hard fans of the series but also all lovers of classic 2D platformers. It’s a game that should have been forgotten, but thanks to the developers’ care, it’s gotten a chance to shine. It offers fun mechanics, great humor, and gorgeous retro graphics. However, you should be aware that it also carries the quirks of its era, particularly in the form of a missing map and occasionally confusing navigation. If you can overlook these flaws, you’re in for about eight hours of pure, unadulterated fun with the most famous half-djinn in the gaming world.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is a perfectly solid shooter that will undoubtedly provide plenty of explosive fun for several weekend evenings. The integration of realistic vehicle physics into a zombie apocalypse is a very refreshing idea, and the legendary soundtrack is sure to delight any fan of 1980s movie classics. However, the game is undermined by an unnecessarily overcomplicated weapon upgrade system, occasional visual chaos, and a slight sense of monotony that inevitably sets in after a few hours. This title simply won’t reach the absolute pinnacle of the genre or revolutionize it, but if you’re looking for some lighthearted, gory action with fantastic B-movie charm, you definitely won’t go wrong with this trip to the infested swamps.

The second video game set in Middle-earth from Monolith Productions surpassed the first installment in every way. It’s no longer just mindless orc-bashing and half-hearted upgrades to the main characters’ weapons or abilities. Middle-earth: Shadow of War offers exactly what a proper RPG should have: a ton of fun and action lasting several dozen hours. Gradually, however, it turns into an annoying quest for better armor, weapons, and in-game currency to upgrade your army. It’s precisely this element that starts to get on your nerves after a while, and if you neglect it, it will catch up with you in the game’s final phase. So if you’re not a fan of endless and pointless grinding, check out the actual game ending on YouTube—otherwise, you’ll waste several long hours chasing after it. But if you enjoy the Assassin’s Creed and Batman: Arkham series, you’ll quickly and easily fall in love with this two-part series.

Despite minor flaws, it’s one of the best experiences of its kind in recent years.

On the other hand, there are significant technical shortcomings, and while playing, you’ll find yourself grappling with the game’s technical glitches more than with its survival mechanics or zombies. At times, the gameplay becomes repetitive, and the story feels underdeveloped—it could have enriched the world with more powerful emotional moments. If the developers manage to polish the game, it will be one of the most solid titles in its genre. For now, it’s really up to each player to decide whether they’re willing to tolerate the large number of bugs.

The game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor doesn’t revolutionize the action RPG genre, but it does offer a faithful adaptation of Tolkien’s world—albeit the one from the movies. It makes no secret of its inspiration from famous series and borrows familiar elements from them, combining them in a way that’s both functional and entertaining. The biggest draw of the first installment, featuring the Ranger Talion and the Elven smith Celebrimbor, is the original concept behind the Nemesis system. This system is the game’s main draw and gives combat a more distinctive character, making for a truly unique gaming experience.

The Lord of the Rings Online is an exceptional MMORPG, primarily due to its atmosphere and respect for Tolkien’s world.
