WORTH CONSIDERING - Neo Atlas 1469 is a simulator that shares a lot with graphic novels. You’ll be setting up trade routes, discovering new lands, and hunting for treasure. This is such a niche genre that not everyone will find enjoyment here, but it’s worth considering for those who love this style of gameplay or for those who are new to the genre.
WORTH CONSIDERING - The Princess Guide is fun at first, overwhelmingly complicated overall, and a little weird to be scolding or praising princesses in their training. It has some great points like crazy button mashing combat, but also has clunky menus and severely repetitive gameplay.
GOOD - Fate/Extella Link features lots of improvements over the previous release, but it still suffers from some of the pitfalls the last title had and does have a steep learning curve for those unfamiliar with the franchise. Hack and slash action aficionados will find a lot to like here!
BAD - The most appealing aspect of The Caligula Effect: Overdose is the battle system which does a pretty good job at being fun for a few hours into the adventure. The game is bogged down by too many problems from boring interaction with NPCs and troublesome game mechanics to be considered something to invest your time or money into.
AWFUL - Look elsewhere for a rogue-like adventure game. With sloppy controls, terrible combat, and irritating noises that will drive you insane, Away: Journey to the Unexpected will begin your journey to the loony bin.
GREAT - OlliOlli: Switch Stance is a satisfying and fun skateboarding game that will challenge you to complete tricks to achieve the highest score. String them together by landing on rails and grinding, launching back up to nail another trick, and then land perfectly to increase your score. Landing in a sloppy way or falling off rails and stairs will send you to last place with shame in your eyes.
GREAT - A heartwarming tale of a wolf who lies and a prince with curiosity crossed with a little stupidity comes to your Switch with hours of enjoyable gameplay. The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince is a 2D adventure title with puzzle solving aspects that reminded me of Ico from years back and that’s a very good thing.
GOOD - When Ski Lifts Go Wrong is an entertaining game with funny predicaments that are often caused by the way you build your structures. This engineering puzzle game will appeal to a wide range of gamers and is an excellent fit for the Switch.
WORTH CONSIDERING - While not a ‘drop the mic’ action puzzle experience, Super Inefficient Golf is a fun and unique game that will entertain you for at least 4 hours before you may start to get a little bored with it. The game gives you a ball, a hole, and a bunch of charges. The fun may need to be supplied by you to try things that seem crazy. While there’s nothing here that’s mind blowing or particularly charming, the fact that failure is always an option gives enough reason to stick with it through a full course.
WORTH CONSIDERING - Unless portable ARK is the number one reason for picking it up, I would recommend getting it on something other than the Switch. PC is really the best way to play it, but the Switch does offer portability, which the PC would only give you with an expensive laptop. I did have fun playing on the Switch and taking it with me when I left. But wherever you do go, remember it's an online game so you will need a decent connection to the web should you want to play on the official servers.
Looking for an amazing racing game that involves combat, thrilling speed, stellar controls, and rewarding excitement? I'm sure there is a game out there that can offer that to you, but Road Redemption is just not it. With graphical and game play issues that frustrate more than exhilarate there are far more worthy titles of your time and money.
With excellent music, beautifully drawn levels, and a story that jerks at the heartstrings, Transistor is a great game that will surely leave you satisfied and wanting to play through it a second time.
Death Mark is a survival horror interactive graphic novel with point and click adventure gameplay elements that is designed to give the player a suspenseful and scary experience. With a heavy emphasis on reading and paying attention to visual cues, it will give fans of the genre a lot to digest. Those who want more action and adventure will want to look elsewhere.
An astoundingly excellent adventure game with a lot to do and a great deal of area to explore. They even take the game to the physical world and give you the option of holding the ships and weapons in your hands. Change them out to be instantly shown in the game and combine them in any way you choose. This is one of the best games to come out for the Switch yet!
Disgaea 1 Complete is the original Disgaea: Hour of Darkness from the PS2 ported to the Switch so that you can take it with you anywhere you go. It’s one of the best tactical RPG games to hit the market and it will give you many, many hours of satisfying strategical gameplay with great graphics and excellent music. If you haven’t had the pleasure of playing the original or just want to play it again for the first time, it’s a solid purchase you won’t regret.
The Spectrum Retreats is an interesting and fun puzzle game. The best parts of the game are the color puzzles that lock and unlock panels that will allow you to move through the levels. It’s a well thought out and challenging game that will give you an estimated 5+ hours of fun.
Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk is a fun, rich, challenging, and deep dungeon crawling RPG experience. There are a ton of mysteries and anyone who loves to explore and find every nook and cranny of the environment will find many things to enjoy. I do recommend the TV experience over the handheld way to play, however both will give you an immersive and satisfying gaming experience. Do yourself a favor Nippon Ichi fans and pick this one up.
If you are into the tactical RPG at all you may want to give this one a go. There is a bit of a learning curve with a lot of things to keep track of like jobs, sub jobs, and passive traits. Once you get the hang of them it should make for many hours of entertaining battle sequences along with a story that’s more compelling than many other titles on the digital and store shelves.
It’s not often that an excellent puzzle game comes out that is both original and well executed. Road to Ballhalla is a solid title that should give you hours and hours of fun. I do recommend playing with a good set of headphones so you can get into the groove with the excellent soundtrack.
Crush Your Enemies had the potential to be a fun strategy title that would be interesting to play with a friend. The controls make it difficult to enjoy because of time goals that get destroyed by futzing with the control stick to make selections and direct your little army to conquer each level. Avoid this one unless it goes on sale and you think you can tolerate the control schema.
