8 / 10.0 - Cookie Cutter
Dec 21, 2023

Fulfilling the promise of elaborate traditional animations, Cookie Cutter aims at the target of the metroidvania formula without the intention of innovating it. It's a precise, debauched and bloody hit, without a doubt, but it still leaves the feeling that the adventure and the songs are not in the same rebellious tone as the vigorous personality displayed by the protagonist in her fluid and brutal movements.

Forgotten at the bottom of the chest, Cannon Dancer Osman is a historical piece rescued for new platforms for the first time. The visuals will please pixel art connoisseurs and the intense gameplay is as simple and fun as an arcade title should be. The many quality-of-life improvement options are welcome and even allow you to set up slightly different ways of playing, but this help can end up making enjoyment even shorter than it actually is. In the end, it is a game suitable for the nostalgic, the curious and those who propose to play repeatedly a very brief campaign, improving their technique with each quick attempt to reach the end.

75 / 100 - Teslagrad 2
May 4, 2023

Teslagrad 2 still focuses on the imprecise physics of electromagnetism mechanics, but the structure transition was inconsistent, guiding the player through a short campaign that induces linearity and does not encourage exploring the interconnected world. Fortunately, the Nordic setting, the pleasant visuals, the folk songs and the moments of agility provide a solid identity that results in a good experience, even if it's not impressive.

75 / 100 - CARRION
May 8, 2023

Carrion is an unusual experience that seeks to do the most with just the essentials, which makes it somewhat repetitive after a while, when almost all the cards are already on the table. Even though it looks like a labyrinthine metroidvania, the design tends to guide the player linearly so as not to get lost, keeping the gameplay flowing between puzzles and massacres, without much reason to explore on your own. The game's greatest success is in fulfilling its promise of horror by putting the player under the skin of a tentacular monster to devour, grow and evolve into the perfect predator.

75 / 100 - LEGO 2K Drive
May 19, 2023

Lego 2K Drive lets you drive at full speed leaving a trail of destruction across open worlds and intense race tracks. Despite bringing good ideas to the table, the game keeps many cards hidden in its sleeve, at the cost of Drive Pass and microtransactions. It is possible to have a lot of fun playing the campaign entirely offline, but there is an absence of more content characteristic of the versatility of the LEGO brand, mainly the minifigures, which cannot be customized and are scarce to acquire by playing, but, not without irony, are abundant in the microtransactions.

75 / 100 - Pizza Possum
Oct 2, 2023

Pizza Possum delivers on its promise and the arcade loot chaos is a lot of fun, a well-done arcade feast that gets even better for those who want to steal food for two in co-op mode. However, like all yummy and ephemeral food, it leaves the taste of wanting more.

75 / 100 - Mail Time
Oct 30, 2023

Mail Time is a brief and lovely game for anyone who wants the tranquil experience of scouring a small open world while engaging with fun characters and doing favors. Although it gives the feeling that it could be more and lacks polish in some areas, the tale of the young wallet's first day of work is interesting and playful. It's like a picture book that you can jump into, glide and enjoy a relaxing pace.

With its well-executed retro personality, Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan is a 2D platforming adventure with plenty of challenges and items to find. The protagonist could be a little more agile, but in general, the game fulfills its role of revisiting styles of the past and improving them.

7.5 / 10.0 - Wavetale
Dec 13, 2022

Wavetale has the adequate duration for what it is: a fluid and agile adventure with an involved story and unexpectedly elaborate for the time it has. The combat fulfills a purely marginal purpose and the technical limitations do not follow the fluidity pattern, but are harmless enough to be highlighted in the context of a game of outstanding humanity and beauty.

7.5 / 10.0 - ITORAH
May 12, 2023

Despite presenting more of the same shy gameplay, the adventure of the last human immediately draws attention to the art and delivers what it promises. Itorah approaches games like Ori and the Blind Forest and the recent Afterimage, among others, to represent the sublime of painting and show that metroidvanias do not live only with pixel art.

7.5 / 10.0 - Nocturnal
Jun 12, 2023

The constant and dynamic use of fire gives Nocturnal a very satisfying identity. The elegant visuals and the melancholic atmosphere are captivating in their own right, but they don't hold the player's interest when falling into repetition. It doesn't take long to reach the end of the game, which is a shame because what it offers us is well done and leaves very clear the potential to take the world, the combat and the mechanics to further developments, with the certainty that the studio would be capable of good additions. Thus, the title closes its beautifully and competently outlined cycle, albeit more concisely and humbly than it should be.

7.5 / 10.0 - Dordogne
Jun 13, 2023

Despite being essentially an interactive narrative experience, I feel Dordogne had to embrace the game format to meet its goal of having us inhabit the countryside region, [feeling] the childhood nostalgia, the characters and their relationships. A movie, comic book or some other visual art medium would not represent Mimi walking through an expressive watercolor [environment] made up of colors, lights and memories in such an immersive manner, even if the gameplay interactions here are shallow.

7.5 / 10.0 - Viewfinder
Jul 17, 2023

Viewfinder is a puzzle game that, on the surface, does the genre justice. Starting from a remarkable concept and presented through well thought out mechanics, deep down the game is limited in developing its ideas to more complex and surprising levels. Just like the gameplay, the narrative and visual aesthetics are always pleasant and keep the appeal of quiet fun, but the undeveloped potential is very clear. Even though it's a good game while it lasts, its moderation in exploring its own limits prevents it from being memorable and putting itself alongside the great puzzle titles.

Jul 25, 2023

The entire identity of Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is in the charisma emanating from the art and characters that make Mara an archipelago endowed with a community personality, where everyone knows everyone else. It's a lovely piece of work, very well done, with the potential to win the sympathy of anyone who lets himself be carried away by the unpretentious adventure. The gameplay is also light, but in an ambivalent tone; even if the set satisfies as a 3D platformer and is accessible to little ones, the ideas cling to a superficiality that doesn't sail with the same captivating quality as Koa and his pirate friends.

7.5 / 10.0 - Life of Delta
Oct 26, 2023

Life of Delta is an efficient and charismatic point and click adventure in its simplicity. The lean context helps maintain the rhythm of the tale of a robot who wants to save his friend and the beautiful painted scenes do a good job of bringing the player closer to the world of Delta, but don't expect mysteries, twists and explanations of the story of this post-modern apocalyptic dystopia. Just enjoy the puzzles and move forward in the metallic skin of the tiny and very human service robot.

Penny’s Big Breakaway is a good game but its show isn't surprising and the commands don't always flow like I'd prefer. There aren't big issues nor big qualities to highlight, making it recommended especially for people who love 3D platformers and colorful games with a cartoon feeling.

7.5 / 10.0 - Rebel Transmute
Mar 21, 2024

Even without innovating or impressing, Rebel Transmute executes its inspiration in Metroid very well. The adventure on an inhospitable planet is enriched with reasonable narrative doses, competent setting, challenging difficulty and exploration of secrets. The almost non-existent direction can be a hindrance and a source of frustrating repetitions, but it will certainly be worth it for those who enjoy metroidvanias, especially in the science fiction aspect.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake misses the chance to be a more relevant and creative reinterpretation, focusing only on the visual redesign. In the end, the tale of the union between two brothers to save their father remains charming and cozy, a story that can be enjoyed playing solo or as a couple. Even though the second option makes gameplay even simpler, the best way to get into the fantasy is up to each person's taste.

Apr 21, 2024

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was clearly made with dedication to deliver an epic experience about assembling a resistance army in the midst of an inglorious war. The narrative cannot give importance to such a vast cast, but, overall, it does a good job with what it has at hand, telling an engaging, well-written and well-voiced story. Translation does not follow the same level and several systems seem to be too close to the old productions on which they are based, missing the chance to modernize to allow for more efficient management. The end result is a good JRPG that suffers from limitations, which can still be resolved with changes here and there to systems, options and menus, bringing with it the potential to really shine in its environment.

70 / 100 - OmegaBot
Jan 18, 2023

OmegaBot has no big problems and no big highlights. A few more features would be welcome. However, with a good pace and challenging bosses, it fulfills its purpose of being a simple and pleasant adventure for those who like 2D platformers.
