Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games has some good ideas but it's weighed down by bad motion controls.

The worst Mario & Sonic game yet and not just a waste of a crossover but a genuinely poor mini-game compilation, and one that makes both the Wii U and the GamePad look bad.

Mario and Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games is easily the best installment in Sega's family-friendly minigame compilation. It's still not going to top the podium, but it's definitely a contender this year.

Mario & Sonic 2014 is a decent party game, but it isn't going to win any medals.

This Olympic outing does a few things right, but you're left with a frustrating experience that's simply no fun played alone. Bringing some friends will make things a little more fun, but the appeal only lasts so long. There's clearly potential here, but these games will never be more than easily discarded novelties until the developer's fine tune the controls and embrace the creative craziness of Dream Matches. Here's hoping Mario and Sonic bring their A game next time around.

Motion control has its detractors and its advocates, but both parties should be able to see that Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games is not one to fly the proverbial waggle flag. The awkwardness of waving a large GamePad around and unresponsive controls make this one of the less enjoyable party offerings available on the system.
