Even before discovering the option to play the game in English, Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers was one of the most interesting versus fighting games that has been played for a while. Not being familiar with the Touhou cast (and not discovering the language options) certainly hampered the overall enjoyment for the game, but the mechanics are so solid that those aspects can be for the most part ignored. It is a great fighting game and one all fans of the genre should try out in order to experience something fresh and exciting.

Touhou Hyouibana Antinomy of Common Flowers is a simple fighting game and nothing more. It has a good soundtrack and mechanics that any player can master. Its biggest flaw is perhaps this simplicity that quickly becomes monotonous.

As a more traditional 2D fighter, Touhou Hyouibana: Antinomy of Common Flowers will scratch your itch for 1-on-1 combat and it features a lovely presentation as well. However, the lack of content and instructions is surely a tough pill to swallow.

Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers is a title that can be nice, but it does not prove to be very friendly for those who do not follow the saga of the characters. As a fighting game, its mechanics and dynamism can both cause strangeness and can also be quite inviting for those who do not want such an intense experience with this genre.

A few well-crafted character sprites and a passable J-Pop soundtrack don’t make up for the poor localization and a nonsensical fighting system.

While Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers is a lot of fun, it does have a really short shelf life due to repetition creeping in. By the third or fourth story run, I felt like I’d already seen everything the game had to offer. With the focus on simple controls, matches tend to go the same way every time much like 3D Arena Brawlers, and this makes matches feel less free flow and more flow chart. The lack of an arcade tower also dampens the package as the story mode doesn’t allow you to choose individual characters and wants to focus on the narrative instead of the combat experience. Another aspect that makes the game feel cheap is the fact the developers never bothered to translate the special moves throughout the game. It’s the lack of little touches like that which put the game further down the genre list than it should be.

Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers can be considered one of the best official fighting games in the franchise, even if it lacks some important aspects. As much as it does not have any innovation for the genre, it has a very solid presentation and easy and simple gameplay, making it a good title for both veterans and novices. Without giving up the elements that make Touhou a highlight within the shoot 'em up genre, Antinomy of Common Flowers may even be the gateway to the franchise for consoles - and for the West as a whole.

Touhou Hyouibana ~ Antinomy of Common Flowers is a pretty decent fighting game. It’s fast, fun, easy to play, but has some meat for advanced players as well. I think the online community not being there hurts the replay value of this one a bit, but if you have some local friends you can duke it out with, you should have a great time. Touhou fans should be all over this one, but the $34.99 price tag is a bit much for what you’re getting here, but if you can snag this one up during a sale, I think most people would be satisfied with the quality.
