Edge of Eternity will scratch the itch of those looking for a classic JRPG with a modern touch, but past that, it doesn’t provide enough to create a truly great experience.

Despite being only developed by a handful of people, Edge of Eternity is by far one of the greatest JRPGs ever made. Its stunning visuals, incredible soundtrack, complex narrative and intricate combat make it an incredibly ambitious title that fulfils each and every promise it makes.

Edge of Eternity is a good RPG, that maybe was a little too ambitious for a small studio but delivers a good experience for people who wish for a JRPG mixing medieval fantasy with magic and technology. The soundtrack is consistently excellent unlike its visual presentation which varies from marvelous to frustrating. Battles are fun and challenging, with simple, interesting mechanics. I honestly believe that, if Midgar Studios had more budget, Edge of Eternity could have competed with the JRPGs of big developers in scale and quality.

My final thought on Edge of Eternity is that after a rocky start, the game is fantastic and one that every RPG player owes to themselves to play. The story is great, the characters are witty, funny, and you make a connection with them. I can’t wait to get stuck back in and find the cure for Corrosion.

Edge of Eternity is an excellent title for any fan of a good, classic JRPG. Showcasing a clear influence from games from the 90's and early 2000's, it's a clear love letter to these experiences. The small size of the studio is notorious, and its ambition to present a large-scale experience is clear. However, this is also one of the problems, as sometimes the title would benefit more from simpler solutions. It's clearly a game with some rough edges and a very problematic pacing, but if you can accept these limitations, you'll certainly have a very pleasant experience.

Edge of Eternity is worth the long wait. Heryon is a beautiful world with a lot to do and explore. While the game is very ambitious it may be too ambitious in a few places.

Edge of Eternity is a passion project with a hell of a lot of heart. The art direction is phenomenal, the combat satisfying and the content positively bursting with hours of enjoyment. Poor performance, less interesting side content and a mediocre story keep it from greatness, but the heart of this package deserves its praise and to be revered into the future.

Edge of Eternity is a must have if you are a JRPG lover. Its only possible but (the technical section) is totally eclipsed by its other sections, which shine with their own light.

Edge of Eternity is a great throwback to classic JRPGs overall. The presentation is fantastic, the world is expansive and there’s plenty to do with your time. That being said, the overall story and supporting characters while solid, were lacking for me. There’s plenty of systems layered in, and while combat is probably the most important system and also arguably Edge of Eternity’s best system, they don’t always seamlessly support one another. It is worth calling out that a reasonably small studio managed to make a large, high quality and very enjoyable game in Edge of Eternity and JRPG fans should come away pleased overall.

Edge of Eternity is a passion project by those people who really love JRPGs putting together. While it is a bit rough around the edges, there are great ideas here and some things to love, including a fair battle system and beautiful crafted world.

Edge of Eternity wanted to be all the games that influenced it, and that prevented it from being its own game. With many ramifications and few conclusions we end up helpless in the beautiful and fairly populated Heryon. No doubt the future of Midgar will be interesting, and while its first adventure doesn't set the course, it already sets the stage for a series to follow.

Whether or not my reaction to Edge of Eternity is a bit clouded by playing another very stylish RPG around the same time or not I can't say, but despite the obvious efforts put in to make Edge of Eternity impressive more often than not I found it fell flat for me...

A JRPG with a lot of potential with room for growth and fine tuning.

I hope the team attempts another game in line with this, as I have no doubt they learned a ton during the development cycle. There’s so much promise here, but it’s ultimately held back by the team’s resources.
