Critic Reviews for For the King 2

Simple and occasionally even elegant mechanics make this cooperative tabletop-style RPG fun once you get into it, but a lacking interface makes it more difficult to enjoy these straightforward adventures than it should be.

For The King 2 is surprisingly one of the most tactically challenging games of 2023, but suffers from being a bit too much of the same next to the previous monarch.

For The King II perfects the winning formula of the first chapter by adding bonuses/maluses linked to positioning and some other pleasant innovations. The gameplay is improved and makes it a great starting point for those who have never played the IronOak franchise. It is not one of those sequels that shows off lots of new features, brilliant innovations or incredibly original ideas, quite the opposite: it is so anchored to its past that it also drags with it some of the defects of its predecessor.

For the King II is a happy synthesis of accessibility and depth, though some of the mechanics can be a bit opaque. It’s ideally a game for four friends but works well enough for a solo player. There’s a bit of a learning curve and it might take time to click, but overall For the King II is colorful, appealing and a lot of turn-based fun.

For the King 2 has really stepped up from the first game, offering enough quality to keep players hooked for hours with many different scenarios.

For the King II has the potential to be a great tabletop-like RPG. At the moment, the biggest things holding the game back are its bugs, matchmaking, and lack of game difficulties. The game’s biggest positives are the ability to have each character flex into a different playstyle, four-play co-op, and the story. With the different bugs we have encountered, we think that For the King II would have benefited from Steam’s Early Access program. Thankfully, it seems that the developers are actively working on bug fixes so it has improved over the last month.

For The King 2 is the perfect sequel. It takes the very best components of its predecessor and uses those time-tested elements to raise the series to new heights. To put it simply, For The King 2 is one of the best strategy-based co-op experiences on the market today.

For The King II is very much a board game more than it is an RPG adventure or grand strategy. You should be fully prepared that slots are just random dice rolls that can lead to chaotic events and outcomes. Treat the game as short fun sessions to play with friends rather than a serious ongoing campaign. Just remain aware that you and your associates will need to own four copies.
