Critic Reviews for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - Mask of Darkness
It was always hard to imagine how Prince of Persia could fit into the new world carved out by Assassin’s Creed all those years ago, a sentiment Ubisoft clearly shared when it shelved the series for over a decade. But The Lost Crown finally found its place, standing tall as one of, if not the best Prince of Persia game — a GOTY contender and a Metroidvania all-timer. The expansion takes all of those elements and brings them up to the next level, making one of Ubisoft’s strongest outings even stronger.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - Mask of Darkness is what every expansion should aspire to. It introduces an interesting new story, new challenging environments and enemies, but doesn't stray too far from what made fans love the original. It's a few more hours of what can be described as more of the same, but that's meant in a complimentary way. The platforming challenges, nonlinear exploration and epic boss battles are why Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is such a great game, and fans can expect to see more of that in Mask of Darkness. Most fans will be able to finish it in around five hours or so, but the quality of that time is well worth the price of admission.
It's simple: did you like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and would like to get back to a new helping of gorgeously designed platforming sections and boss fights that are some of the best you've ever seen in a 2D game? Well, don't even think about it: the Mask of Darkness DLC is a "must have".

Although it meets the will of those who wanted more Prince of Persia, Mask of Darkness is not an essential chapter to the base game. The difficulty found shows that the target audience of the expansion is those who appreciated the precision platform segments, but the expansion does not add much beyond that, not even in story and art direction. In the end, it is good content to play, but relatively unnecessary, recommended only for enthusiasts.

I believe the best word to describe Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - Mask of Darkness is intensity. The DLC is short and straightforward, bringing new enemies, platforming challenges, and a challenging, fun final battle. Both new players and experienced ones will have to readapt themselves to Sargon's skills and figure out [how to deal with] the new additions it presents. All the novelties bring a fresh air to Sargon's adventure, showing that the Ubisoft Montpellier team can bring good additions to the franchise within this metroidvania structure.

For under a fiver and with around five to six hours of content, the Mask of Darkness is practically an essential addition for fans of The Lost Crown. Offering an intense experience; as well as a surprisingly compelling story that fills in many of the blanks from the original game. Recommended.
