Critic Reviews for Rogue Flight

Players looking for a sci-fi retro shooter experience with a bit of modernization will no doubt enjoy Rogue Flight out of the box. The replayability comes into question as it comes off more grindy than an arcade shooter or the unlockable roguelike mode should. The visuals and the experience along with the voice acting are superb, while the soundtrack is fantastic and most fans of this genre will enjoy the music alone. The steep PC requirements for an indie title may hurt this in the end, though.

Rogue Flight is a good entry into the genre and one that is enjoyable but has a feeling something is slightly missing.

Every inch of Rogue Flight gleams with style. An obvious passion project like this is filled with delightful little details. Playing Rogue Flight is a joy. I’m an easy mark, the second I see something with wings loaded into a tube, I’m already in. And the sky isn’t crowded with a lot of options. Rogue Flight zooms past expectations into a cool, scrappy game.

Rogue Flight is a fast-paced and adrenaline-filled rail shooter. The plot and structure of the campaign are good, the latter with five difficulty levels to allow anyone to enjoy it, regardless of their skills. The only let downs is that the roguelite mode is only sketched out and that there is an exaggerated presence of visual effects that are too shiny and annoying.

As an arcade rail shooter, Rogue Flight hits all of its marks. It doesn't aim for anything outside of the norm, but that allows it to focus entirely on its frenetic gameplay and anime setup/presentation. Players of all skill levels will be able to hop in and enjoy.

Rogue Flight is a well-made, perfectly-priced arcade-style 3D space action shooter that serves as an open love letter to 80's and 90's anime/shmup era fans, offering plenty nostalgia, throwback references and many hours of replay value.

Ultimately, Rogue Flight is a love letter to retro anime and manages to impress with its story and voice work. The combat is a bit too hectic to be considered strategic, but conversely that makes it an easier game to pick up.
