Critic Reviews for Shape of Dreams

I’m certain that Shape of Dreams will find its fans and treat them right, because roguelite debuts are rarely as content-rich, mechanically deep, or stable as this one; there’s even drop-in/drop-out co-op, a remarkably rare multiplayer boon.

Shape of Dreams does many things very well. It counters the roguelike problem of early game frustration by giving players lots of powerful and impressive tools right from the start. The flow of combat and the variety of builds have a lot of depth. The bite-sized battles are perfectly paced, though probably more satisfying for a group than a solo player. Shape of Dreams definitely has that compulsive, “just one more run” element at its core, and it’s a great scaffold for more content down the line.

Sure, it can get rather hectic at times, but that’s the nature of the beast, after all. Yes, it can take a bit to learn all of its elements and figure out how to create an excellent build. But once you do, you’ll become unstoppable, as you rush through enemies. Shape of Dreams feels very satisfying to play, there’s never a dull moment, and you’ll always feel the itch for one more run.

Shape of Dreams has truly impressed me in ways I didn’t expect. It’s one of the most complete roguelites of the year — a game that respects your time, rewards experimentation, and delivers memorable experiences both solo and with friends. While there’s room for improvement, its foundation is so strong and its potential so clear that I have no doubt it will only get better over time. After more than 50 hours, I’m still discovering new Memory combinations, hidden synergies, and secrets I thought I’d already uncovered. That, to me, defines a great roguelite: one that keeps the thrill of discovery alive long after you’ve mastered its systems. Shape of Dreams isn’t just another roguelite — it’s proof that passion and creativity can rival even the biggest names in the genre.

Shape of Dreams has become one of the most interesting roguelites of the moment, thanks to an almost infinite variety of builds and its cooperative possibilities. And what didn't work at launch has been fixed with frequent updates. It feels like the best is yet to come.

Shape of Dreams succeeds because it doesn't just copy what other roguelikes have done. The ability to constantly rewrite your character mid-run makes experimentation the heart of the game. With good fighting and a progression system that makes you feel good about yourself, this roguelike is great even when it's still warm from the oven. There is always a fresh way to explore the dreamy yet scary world, whether you are playing alone or with pals in four-player co-op.
