Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is an impressively challenging RPG with an engaging story and enjoyable adventuring mechanics that will make you want to keep exploring its gorgeous world which is filled with memorable environments, creatures, and characters. š¶
Third timeās the charm. Building on the best parts of its identity, Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is ambition done right, blowing expectations out of the water and showing that, sometimes, fortune favours the bold.
The only time I didnāt have much fun was towards the end trying to get a particular gene to spawn so that I could get past the final boss. The many systems of the game feel rewarding and the combat is super enjoyable once you get a handle on it and there are plenty of ways to extend your run time if you so choose.
For fans of Monster Hunter and JRPGs in general, Twisted Reflection represents the highest point Capcom's spin-off has reached so far.

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection holds the main series traditions close to its heart while building on top of the already solid base of its predecessors. Egg Hunting, quelling unnatural events, monster raising, and roaming vast maps are still here, while being enhanced by some fresh, new ingredients, which fit snugly between the Environmentalist themes and Monster rearing gameplay. Through and through, Monster Hunter Stories 3 is a richly detailed and gorgeous experience that any fan of Monster-Raising RPGs is sure to enjoy.
Twisted Reflection reaches the series' definitive form: a perfect balance of exploration, strategy, and collecting that keeps you hooked for dozens of hours without ever wearing thin. Simply extraordinary.

Although I have been a Monster Hunter fan from day one, my exposure to the Stories series had been sporadicāuntil now. That is about to change, for with Twisted Reflection, the spin-off reaches a level of quality that is simply impressive. Whether itās the consistently cohesive ā and at times bombastic ā presentation, the characters bursting with heart, the gripping storyline, or the deep progression system ā it all comes together beautifully. Add to this the combat and crafting systems, which wonderfully translate the core Monster Hunter feel into a turn-based RPG format. All of this is delivered on a scale vast enough to keep you glued to your screen for months on end. While you have to look hard to find its flaws, they do exist. In particular, if you have an aversion to grinding, the final 5% of the story can become a true test of patience. Furthermore, many side quests are absolutely tedious, and the dialogue can sometimes be unnecessarily long-winded. However, since these elements can largely be ignored or skipped, I am more than willing to overlook this minor shortcoming. For these reasons, I can wholeheartedly recommend Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection to any JRPG enthusiast āand especially to fellow Monster Hunter fans.

With excellent characters, a decent story, an enjoyable gameplay loop with as much grinding as you want there to be, and a really gorgeous appearance and world, itās a genuine must play for fans of turn-based RPGs.

In total, it took me almost 66 hours to get through the credits once. It could certainly be done a bit faster, since I occasionally let myself get sidetracked by fighting monsters I wasn't quite ready for yet, or by grinding levels. Most of the time, though, when I reached a new area, I ignored the story quest marker for the time being and explored the new area.
