Earnest Evans Collection is a quirky revival of three retro titles that still carry a strange magnetic charm. Despite the frustrations, the limited visibility, and the lack of modern features, the package offers a solid slice of retro adventure with multiple versions of each game, quality‑of‑life overlays, and a museum full of extras. It is a great little collection, especially for players who missed these games back in the day and want to rediscover their chaotic energy.
Despite El Viento, Earnest Evans and Annet Returns not being the best games, bringing them to modern consoles is a great way for gamers, young and old, to relive or experience them for the first time. They play just as well (or as badly) as they did back in the day, can be played in both Japanese and English, the extra features make the experience easier, and the Gallery featuring images, cutscenes and music from all three games can make Earnest Evans Collection a worthwhile purchase to add to your digital retro games library.
Adults who enjoyed Earnest Evans as kids will be disappointed to find out how truly janky it was, and those intrigued by the companion titles will be let down. It’s a coffee table book where anyone reading it will immediately set it back down. The digital edition holds curiosity and little else. Pick up a copy if you must, especially for preservation’s sake, but don’t expect this to do anything but collect dust.
