The Alters: Last Variable builds on the base game with new mechanics, a new story, and more, but it doesn't always make the most of its innovations on the original.
Jan Scientist proves as compelling a character as ever, and his specialized Alters are more than a match in terms of charisma. Cryo-sleep adds a unique twist to long-term decision-making. Sharp writing and presentation, just like the base game.
The Alters: Last Variable is a mostly positive return for the Jan clan that adds complexity to the core gameplay but removes depth and character from the story.
The Last Variable DLC offers a captivating complementary experience to The Alters, opening the door to yet another compelling adventure. If you enjoyed The Alters and found yourself grappling with plenty of philosophical questions along the way, this expansion is not to be missed.

It isn't an essential DLC; it doesn't bring anything fundamental to the universe. But if you want to spend some extra time with Jan ' or rather, the Jans ' this offers the opportunity, along with a decent new story and some minor additions for research, crafting, and exploration.

A fantastic game gets that much better. A heartfelt, brilliantly written DLC touches on the cost of progress vs. our own sense of humanity.
Last Variable is a great expansion that improves on the original design. Terraforming and the new processing chain changes will give returning players new systems to play with and master. The cycles, Planetary Activity, and Field Lab research and aging mechanics add additional high-stakes considerations to an already-dynamic system. While some mechanics can feel a bit repetitive or even too complicated at first glance, they don’t feel undercooked. This is not a game or DLC to rush through, so I can understand if it doesn’t appeal to everyone.
