Everspace 2: Galactic Edition provides a wealth of content for space combat fans on the Switch 2 and is a welcome addition to the console’s real dearth of any similar title in the genre. For fans of collecting things, exploring this vast galaxy and tweaking their ship with the vast amounts of upgrades, there are dozens and dozens of hours of fun here. While the story is just okay and nothing special, it does a decent job of putting lead character Adam in the situations where the game’s selling points really shine: the exciting combat and spacefaring. There are compromises here; the 30fps will be annoying for some and the loading screens between sectors is a considerable buzzkill. However, the framerate never diminishes the overall experience and the sense that Everspace 2 is a very welcome addition to the platform.
I'd be curious if a lower resolution sixty frames-per-second mode could alleviate some input lag. You can certainly still fight your way through on this version, but you may find that quickly tracking small targets becomes needlessly frustrating very fast. There are other more mild issues to be addressed as well but the controls need to be a priority.
If you already own EVERSPACE 2 on PC, PS5 or Xbox and are happy playing it there, I wouldn’t suggest buying it again purely for the graphics. But if you’re someone who loves the idea of being able to pick up a game like this and play it anywhere, the Switch 2 version makes a very convincing argument for itself. For me, that’s the biggest achievement here. EVERSPACE 2: Galactic Edition is a big, ambitious space RPG that really shouldn’t feel this comfortable running on a handheld. Yet somehow it does. I am so impressed that I’m giving it the Thumb Culture Platinum Award!
With a solid main story, plenty of space to explore, engaging combat, and a load of DLC to enjoy as well, this is an impressive package
EVERSPACE 2: Galactic Edition represents the definitive version of ROCKFISH Games' epic space adventure. The shift in gameplay mechanics for this sequel moving away from the roguelike elements of the original has yielded vastly superior results, without detracting from the first game's merits. It is an addictive space looter-shooter that, while offering genuine depth, features arcade-style handling accessible to any type of player; this is now complemented by a massive amount of additional content that expands and enhances an already outstanding experience. And if that still doesn't convince you, the audiovisual presentation surely will: space has never looked this beautiful.
