Has some nice classic side-scrolling arcade beats mixed with unique buggy theming, but it also doesnât quite stand out in terms of play in a very crowded space in the eShop
When Apidyaâ Special landed on my desk, I had no idea who this package would be for. After playing it for a handful of hours, I can wholeheartedly say that itâs a game for me! Itâs a loving remake of a cult Amiga classic with enough tweakable options to make the game enjoyable for gamers of all skill levels. It looks fantastic in both its original and enhanced modes, and those visuals and quirky stage design help separate it from the other Shmups on the block. âI donât think itâs going to attract much of a new crowd given how niche a title it is, but for you retro enthusiasts out there, Apidyaâ Special is absolutely worth it. Itâs a loving remaster of a unique title from yesteryear, when games didnât really need a reason; they just took an idea and ran with it. Or, in this case, turned into a wasp and flew with it!
I think Apidyaâ Special has one pretty important thing going for it: it knows exactly what it wants to offer.

Kaiko has recreated the original Amiga Apidya quite meticulously, with what seems like genuine love and care. They've added subtle extras and, primarily, visual enhancements while staying remarkably true to the original gameplay. How well that gameplay holds up is very much a matter of personal taste, though. To me, some of its level design choices feel more like issues than features. It's hard to really get into a groove when difficulty spikes and seemingly unavoidable deaths lurk around almost every corner.
