Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is almost a 1:1 port of the original Super Famicom version. The visuals were revamped, and there are a few new quality-of-life and accessibility options, but the gameplay experience is largely the same, for better or worse.
First released in 1993 on the Super Famicom, Enix's Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon Classic HD spinoff brought an addicting dungeon-crawling experience with a distinctive Dragon Quest coat of paint that introduced players to the concept of the Mystery Dungeon genre
Permadeath rogues and randomised Mystery Dungeons are an acquired taste as is, let alone being a Dragon Quest IV spinoff. However, despite it being one of the first of its kind, Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon Classic HD still manages to be engrossing and stimulating. It probably didn't even need the visual overhaul, but it's an appreciated bonus that breathes a bit of life into this belated release.
Sure, it has aged poorly in a few areas, but the core gameplay remains just as entertaining more than three decades later. This charming game absolutely nails that “just one more run” feeling that every roguelike strives for, yet surprisingly few manage to perfect.
Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon may have some bumpy parts that are tough to revisit all these years of iteration later, but it serves as a pleasant enough adventure and a fascinating piece of gaming history. I hope the next couple of Torneko games follow suit, as I’d love to have an excuse to see how each subsequent game builds on the last. Plus, I’ll never say no to more official releases of the past Dragon Quest games that the West missed out on.
Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is the perfect way to experience the game that popularized the roguelike structure in Japan, featuring improvements that don't detract from the original experience but instead smooth out the gameplay itself.

Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD- is at its best when every step feels like a small gamble. Its enemies, exploration, and constant curiosity about the next floor kept pulling me back, even if sluggish controls and inventory management often got in the way.
