Critic Reviews for The Huntsman: Winter's Curse

The Huntsman: Winter’s Curse is a turn-based RPG without the deep upgrade systems and gripping stories you’ve seen in other games within the genre.

The Huntsman: Winter's Curse's relatively short campaign is a slog, with little variation in the types of enemies presenting themselves. Moreover, the plot is so basic that it offers little in the way of distraction from the terrible mechanics of the game. The only saving grace is that this is an attractive game with its storybook stylisation.

As a fan of Snow White and the Huntsman, I can appreciate the premise of the story and the effort to expand the universe through Elisabeth’s story. As a gamer, it did become frustrating at some times. The takeaway from this is that, while you don’t have to have watched the movies to enjoy this game, it definitely helps solidify the universe in which you’re playing. It draws on elements such as Queen Freya’s castle or the enchanted forest known as Sanctuary, or understanding that Goblins are extremely weak to fire. It’s little things, but it makes the experience a little more meshed together. I can say this much, it was a better story than Winter’s War.

A great game wrapped in a blanket of bugs.

The Huntsman’s greatest flaw is that it’s ultimately quite forgettable. You’ll remember having fun with the combat system, and if you’re anything like me you’ll remember enjoying the art style. Unfortunately (and a little like the films in this regard), the game simply struggles to justify itself as something unique or compelling within the context of being a modern reimaging of a fairytale.

The Huntsman: Winter’s Curse is a fun RPG and a great way to introduce people to the genre. It’s simple enough for new players to pick up and learn, especially if they enjoyed the movies. Veterans of the genre may find it a bit too easy, but you can change the difficulty if you want. If you are looking to get someone into the RPG genre, you can’t go wrong with this one. I enjoyed playing the game for my The Huntsman: Winter’s Curse review, and I hope you do as well.

The Huntsman: Winter's Curse would have been a much more exciting experience had it had better direction. There are interesting battle mechanics, but they never reach their full potential, and the textboxes describe dramatic scenes, which the characters on-screen fail to act out. Also, most importantly, basic progression through the adventure is hindered by the bugs that will break all but the most persistent of gamers. There was a predicted winter's curse, but many will feel that it has arrived early in this ultimately broken release…

If you’re looking for a streamlined turn-based RPG to play on PlayStation 4, then this is a good option. The price is right for the amount of content on offer, and the strategy elements will keep you on guard during every fight. If this is the type of games we’re getting from now on as movie tie-ins, then I’ll certainly be happy!
