All of this works to take the heart out of this game, and make it feel like a slap-dash effort on PC. The gameplay is truly eclectic, but the ridiculous graphics fiasco and the lackluster set dressing bring it way down. It may well be the best gameplay this series has seen since the PS2 era, but it doesn’t look the part.

Pro Evolution 2017 is not a step forward in the evolution of the series. Apart from the huge lack of licenses, Konami has not added new game modes in order to keep the franchise fresh. Besides, the online mode is a mess and gives very negative vibes.

PES 2017 might be a giant leap for PES, but it’s a very little step for football games. Little to offer off the pitch and a joyless chore on the pitch. For hardened PES fans there’s probably enough to satisfy, but for the rest of us we look to FIFA with hope and trepidation. Don’t screw us on this one EA!

Konami hat im folgenden Jahr einiges zu tun. Das fantastische Gameplay wird vom biederen und angestaubten Rahmen leider zu sehr in Mitleidenschaft gezogen.

From a non-footballer, here is the verdict. Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 is a great football game and it deserves to get as much spotlight as the new FIFA. The unlicensed teams are hilariously close to puns, the customisation of players and the team management aspects are fantastic, if a little complex, and the pitch play is amazingly fun. With the multitude of modes and options available, it's worthy of this year's football game crown, and it's a must-have for those who like a bit of realism and meat to their sports games.

To this date there has never been a football sim that has handled gameplay the way PES 2017 does.

In terms of pure gameplay, Pro Evolution 2017 is the best soccer simulation on the market. Unfortunately, truly appreciating it requires plenty of concessions.

A very good football game, but why are we being fobbed off with a console-light experience?

The mission has been accomplished for one half of the aforementioned vast target demographic, but the other half may still have eyes for FIFA 17.

PES 2017 produces some of the best action on the pitch that the franchise has seen in many years, but the rest of the experience is still left trying to catch up.

"Overall, PES 17 is an enjoyable game; a representation of football the way we sometimes wish it to be, and a good time with a friend (or stranger). It’s not a revelation for the series though, nor is it a huge advance on its predecessor. The niggles mentioned above stop this game being ‘great’ in my opinion, but many of these are subjective points and your experience with the game could easily differ dependent on how much or little you agree. At the very least, the game proves it can go shoulder to shoulder with its closest rival; offering a satisfyingly different gameplay experience."

Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 is a great game. Everything has improved in this game and the AI is much better in this game. Overall an extremely fun game.

In terms of pure gameplay, Pro Evo takes the crown from FIFA. The subtle improvements made to last years version have been thoughtful and impactful to the way the beautiful game is played. PES 2017 is, arguably, the best football game ever created.

PES keeps significantly improving every year, but in this installment they reached a level that qualifies them to compete with their popular competitor - FIFA. It still has its own share of problems such as bad online mode, and not having the rights to include many popular clubs, but that doesn’t affect it’s how realistic, simple or fun it is to play.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 is the football game to beat this year as it is without a doubt, one of the best football simulators to date.

PES 2017 is not perfect or revolutionary, but it is a solid entry into the PES franchise that fixes some of the problems of PES 2016 and features enough AI improvements that make playing a bit more enjoyable. If you want a taste of how good the game can be, try the co-op mode at a higher difficulty level - that is how we enjoyed the game the most. If you've never played football games, PES 2017 is beginner friendly. Training modes and customisable controls are good enough for new players. Experienced players will also find enough of a challenge to have a blast this game. Its only major weakness is the commentary. If that doesn't bother you, then you should buy PES 2017.

Another big step in the right direction

If this review appears overly-critical, it's only because Pro Evolution Soccer is so close to being a complete product on and off the pitch. With the base gameplay seemingly nailed down, Konami should be capitalising by improving other elements of its beautiful game: chiefly its presentation, style, and game modes. Whatever shortcomings it has before and after the whistle blows however, the pure footballing experience of PES remains second-to-none.

Pro Evolution Soccer has never looked better, and with great controls to match, Pro Evo 2017’s core gameplay is incredible. However, a lack of licenses and repetitive commentary keep the title from shining as brightly as it could have.

For those who are simply looking for the best football game around, there are few better than Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 thanks to additions and improvements all over the pitch from the previous entries in the franchise. However, with only a small range of licenses and a lacklustre editor, those that value authenticity, an entirely reasonable demand considering that the aim of these games is to recreate the sport to its fullest, may want to wait a few weeks to see how the new FIFA fares before making a purchase.
