Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, at its most well-executed, is a grueling slice of a very real nightmare.
Modern Warfare Remastered is a near-perfect remaster. The developer has fiddled with things only when absolutely necessary, and though I do wish some of the multiplayer perks had been tweaked or removed altogether, I can understand why they have been left alone. Just be sure to brace yourself for the rapid time-to-kill, the frustrating deaths at the hands of un-counterable grenades, and the permanently active enemy UAVs. Get past all of that, and you’ll see the Modern Warfare magic that sparked huge changes for first-person shooters and pushed them to the forefront, becoming the industry’s powerhouses.
Raven Software has set a high bar here. Not only is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered faithful to the original, but it gives it a fresh coat of paint that makes it look just as good as any modern PS4 game.
The decision to only release MWR with purchases of the upcoming Infinite Warfare and the apparent intent on never making it available as a stand alone game appears to be a desperate cash grab. This sales model either assumes that every COD 4 fan has been a dedicated franchise devotee for the past nine years which is most certainly not the case, or it hopes that hardcore COD 4 fans will be willing to shell out just to play the remastered version of their favourite game. But let’s face it: nobody in their right mind would spend $129 AUD on a nine year old game with improved visuals… would they?
Infinity Ward's seminal Call of Duty gets the revamp it deserves; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered gives the 2007 shooter a new lease of life, enabling newcomers to see what all the fuss was about and veterans the chance to relive a classic. The best Call of Duty game just got even better.
Once upon a time Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was the cream of the crop when it came to FPSs. Nine years later and Modern Warfare Remastered reminds us that FPSs have come such a long way. At its best, it's still a genuine competitor to current FPS, but Modern Warfare Remastered isn’t at its best enough.
Even now, Modern Warfare is pushing boundaries, just in newer ways. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered sets a standard that shames other so-called 'remastered titles.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered’s campaign might feel outdated by today’s standards, but its multiplayer remains as addictive and fun as ever.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is one of the best remasters ever made and makes a classic game even better by giving it a fresh coat of paint. If you miss the old Call of Duty, this was made specifically for you.
