Critic Reviews for Sunless Sea - Zubmariner
Failbetter provides an exquisite expansion to Sunless Sea that runs deep.
Verdict: The dangers of the abyss are well worth facing for Zubmariner’s bounty of fantastic stories and strange adventures.
Sunless Sea is a unique title. A rogue-like set in a Lovecraftian nightmare with table-top RPG elements backed up by some truly excellent writing. The slow pace, and narrative delivery may well put some players off though.
A gothic masterpiece of weird fiction and roguelike exploration, that gives you the freedom to do whatever you want in one of gaming's weirdest fictional worlds.
Failbetter Games have brought upon themselves a trademark capable of enduring over time, born with Fallen London back in the day and now present in both Sunless Sea and the upcoming Sunless Skies. This is by far the best way to experience the studio's vision and their unique take in narrative driven games.
An intimidating and slow burning prospect, for those who can look behind its challenging facade Sunless Sea: Zubmariner Edition soon reveals itself to be a masterly work that deftly marries great writing with fine tuned roguelike mechanics.
It appeals to a certain type of gamer, one who embraces the challenge and has the patience to explore the lore which is waiting for you.
Sunless Sea is a good game and Zubmariner brings a solid amount more of that goodness into the fold… But for anyone who has played the game somewhat extensively, I would proceed with caution because for me, a lack of anything really new was the straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back.
