Destiny 2 once seemed like a live-service game that could go on forever, as each subsequent expansion attracted hordes of new players and consistently broke the game's concurrent player count. In 2023, Lightfall attracted 316,750 concurrent players just on Steam. These days, Destiny 2 sits at around 13,000 players and the previous major expansion, Edge of Fate, only managed approximately 110,000 concurrent players.
Destiny 2's shrinking player base has coincided with constant controversy at Bungie. In recent memory, the studio has experienced several rounds of layoffs, had a former creative director accused of sexual harassment, unknowingly included plagiarised assets in Marathon's alpha and subsequently delayed the release of Marathon. All of these events have contributed to increased pressure on Bungie from parent company Sony.
Still, Destiny 2 has a core player base who have been playing the game for several years and game director Tyson Green is still optimistic about the future of the live-service shooter. In an interview with IGN, Green gave his thoughts on the future of Destiny 2.
