Valve is in an excellent place with Steam, as a platform. It's a destination and default for many digital game buyers, but fans are concerned about Valve's repeated attempts to enter the hardware market with Steam Machines.
Over on Reddit, fans are speculating on the upcoming Steam Machine price, and folks are split. In any case, everyone has an upper limit, and the onus is on Valve to meet it.
After being asked "at what price would you not buy the Steam Machine," fans were eager to reply. As expected, answers range from "any price is fine" to "any price isn't fine," but there seems to be a sweet spot for many people.
Others are in the middle, noting that they are interested, but there's an upper limit: "If it's more than $750 because at that point I could build a home theater PC with used parts with similar performance." Another replied: "Wouldn’t mind the range being between 700-1000 from base to top model." A Russian user also replied: "Considering the way things are priced in my country, just about $1000 would probably be a reasonable limit."
