Square Enix Is Worried About Final Fantasy's Aging Player Base

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was a big game in every sense of the word. A huge RPG that was played by a lot of people. The trouble is, most of those people were older fans of the series, and it seems like Square Enix is starting to grow concerned that it doesn't know how to get young people interested in Final Fantasy anymore.

According to data shared by Circana's Mat Piscatella (via GamesRadar+), 62 percent of people who played Rebirth in the US were 35 or older. Drop that age bracket down to 30, and the piece of the Rebirth player base pie increases to a whopping 77 percent.

There's an argument to be made that those figures are somewhat expected for a game like Rebirth. It's the middle chapter in a remake trilogy based on a game that was released almost 30 years ago. Ergo, a large chunk of those who want to play it will be doing it for nostalgia purposes, having played the original Final Fantasy 7 30 years ago.
