The Cube, Save Us Becomes the Latest Live-Service Cautionary Tale | TechRaptor

Developer and publisher XLGAMES has announced that its rather curiously-named MMO extraction shooter The Cube, Save Us will be shutting down at the beginning of May.

In a post on Steam (thanks, Delisted Games), the developer says the news that the game will be shutting down is "heartbreaking", and that The Cube, Save Us "started with a lot of support and affection" from players. Nonetheless, the servers for the shooter will be going offline on May 8th.

Refunds will be issued for anything you might have bought "legitimately" via Steam, and the developer is aiming to have all of those refunds issued by April 9th. XLGAMES won't be the only dev to refund players after shutdown in this way.

XLGAMES doesn't provide any kind of reason for The Cube, Save Us' shutdown (save for hinting that the game has lost a lot of the support it garnered at launch), but you don't have to look too far to find a probable smoking gun.

First, a quick look at the Steam numbers for the shooter shows that it's attracting a fraction of the 5,000-plus players it brought in at launch a few weeks back, with just under 400...
