Bungie Reportedly Didn't Begin Development On Destiny 3 Because It Would Cost Too Much

Earlier this week, Bungie announced that it would be sunsetting Destiny 2 with one final update in June.

Bloomberg reported soon after that the studio is now bracing for layoffs, with no plans to develop a third game, and according to Jason Schreier, it all comes down to cost.

"A lot of people have wondered why Bungie didn't immediately start working on Destiny 3 after The Final Shape two years ago," he posted to Bluesky. "The answer (as it usually is) is how much money it would take."

Destiny 3 is "NOT in active production" right now, according to Schreier, as the focus remains squarely on supporting the team's new extraction shooter, Marathon, but it's not for a lack of trying.

Reportedly, staff are "pitching and prototyping new ideas including Destiny games" to PlayStation, who acquired the studio in 2022 in a $3.6 billion deal, but none have been greenlit. When asked if there's any good news for fans, or any hope for the franchise, Schreier said, "I really wish I had an answer for that."
