An antitrust complaint has been announced in Mexico, following the decision by PlayStation to abandon physical media starting in January 2028. The announcement has caused significant frustration among PlayStation users, as the move will take away a lot of the freedom they have in terms of ownership and the control they have over their purchases. An all-digital future means users won't be able to lend out, sell off, or trade in their used video games.
The PlayStation Store is removing more than 500 movies this year, and users who purchased them will not be refunded. This announcement raised significant concerns about digital ownership. When video games are delisted from digital storefronts, it often leads to increased interest in physical copies. Once physical copies are no longer offered for PS5 games, users will no longer be able to fall back on that option after digital games get delisted. It's even possible that digital copies of games could be removed from the libraries of users in the same way the PlayStation Store is handling movies.
Xbox plans for an all-digital future by apparently creating a way for fans to keep playing physical games purchased over the years.
