Critic Reviews for Rhythm Heaven Groove
Rhythm Heaven Groove is a superb sequel that expertly capitalizes on the captivating energy of its excellent music across a series of joyfully animated minigames.
Having played every single title in the series and mastered some of its hardest challenges, Groove feels like the perfect entry point for newcomers who want to see what the fuss is all about.
Infectiously charming, Rhythm Heaven Groove's simple musical mini-games are buoyed by smart game design that becomes more than the sum of its parts, inviting you onto the stage to master its odd-ball antics. Loaded with side-modes, Beatspell is a surprise RPG triumph that deserves more investment, but is a great first step.
Rhythm Heaven Groove is an infectious blend of unapologetic weirdness and toe-tapping rhythm gameplay, and a heck of a party game to boot.
Rhythm Heaven brings the cute quirkiness the series is known for to the Switch. It's also packed with a lot of content and distractions. It just might be missing some of the charm that has made previous games some of the best in the genre.
Rhythm Heaven Groove brings Nintendo's franchise of wacky rhythm minigame collections to the Nintendo Switch.
Tomodachi Life was a late-cycle winner, but if Rhythm Heaven Groove is to be its swansong, Switch 1 is going out on a high note. Beatspell didn't hit for me, personally, and the lag issues thrown up by playing on a modern TV are irritating, so be aware that you'll need to play in handheld or tabletop mode to get the best out of it.You shouldn't let that dissuade you from experiencing one of gaming's most infectiously fun-filled series, though. I was worried that we'd make it through the Switch generation without a Rhythm Heaven, but coming just over a decade after the last, Nintendo has snuck out one final hit for the old Switch. A surprise and a delight, indeed.
Not all the levels are winners, and I certainly found myself with a feeling of disappointment at how many of them end anticlimactically, but Rhythm Heaven Groove is still a neat little game that's worth diving into.
