Tomodachi Life was a late-cycle winner, but if Rhythm Heaven Groove is to be its swansong, Switch 1 is going out on a high note. Beatspell didn't hit for me, personally, and the lag issues thrown up by playing on a modern TV are irritating, so be aware that you'll need to play in handheld or tabletop mode to get the best out of it.You shouldn't let that dissuade you from experiencing one of gaming's most infectiously fun-filled series, though. I was worried that we'd make it through the Switch generation without a Rhythm Heaven, but coming just over a decade after the last, Nintendo has snuck out one final hit for the old Switch. A surprise and a delight, indeed.
Not all the levels are winners, and I certainly found myself with a feeling of disappointment at how many of them end anticlimactically, but Rhythm Heaven Groove is still a neat little game that's worth diving into.
Its little games are simple, yet addictive, its imagery is silly and light-hearted, and there is undoubtedly music that will stay with players well after they clear any given round. I’m not crazy about how simplistic some of the bonuses are, but I did like the parallel progress through co-op games with their own unlocks.

Rhythm Paradise Groove is the classic Rhythm Paradise experience: colorful, fun, musically outstanding, and it keeps you glued to the screen until you complete every single minigame. Setting aside the welcome additions, though, I was expecting something more, given the many years spent waiting for a new entry in the series. Something that could satisfy both my completionist drive and my emotional side. As it stands, unfortunately, it remains an incredible and beautiful toy.

Rhythm Heaven Groove is a great entry in the series, featuring a ton of catchy tunes and fun scenarios. It’s a welcome return to one of my favorite series and an easy game to recommend to just about anyone, regardless of their familiarity or skills with the genre.
Rhythm Heaven Groove delivers a double album's worth of content, including a bumpin' new collection of minigames, a fully fleshed-out multiplayer option, mini RPG mode, and various other quirky odds and ends. The game's idiosyncratic approach to the rhythm genre means your experience may be somewhat uneven -- you'll like some minigames more than others -- but most folks will find plenty here to get their hearts beating.
It might not do too much to stray from the music minigame formula it helped popularise some two decades ago, but Rhythm Heaven Groove is still exactly the kind of grand return for this beat-bopping series I was hoping for.
