It might not do too much to stray from the music minigame formula it helped popularise some two decades ago, but Rhythm Heaven Groove is still exactly the kind of grand return for this beat-bopping series I was hoping for.

Rhythm Paradise Groove, like its predecessors, may not be the most challenging rhythm game in the strictest sense, the kind you occasionally see on YouTube videos from Japanese arcades (but be careful not to underestimate it, eh?), but it remains one of the genre's cornerstones thanks to its extraordinary mix of intuitive gameplay, a "hit-and-run" approach, the quality of the songs it offers as background music, and the variety and creativity of the scenarios and situations it uses as pretexts to get us tapping our feet and keeping track of our beats.

Groove might appear to be a tough and demanding cookie on the surface with its emphasis on precision timing, but the way the game teaches and rewards you for playing are boundless, and it’s a breezy pick up and play game with a treasure trove of extras that’ll keep you wanting and craving more of it.
Rhythm Heaven Groove is a silly, addictive rhythm game that brings the same weird energy that fans of WarioWare will recognize. As my first experience with the series, I was surprised by how much fun its odd challenges and catchy gameplay offered.

With over 80 new games to play and 30 unique co-op and competitive minigames to jump into at any time, plus a whole host of extra activities to check out, there’s no shortage of fun to be had.
If you’re someone like me who fears rhythm games due to their challenges, then Rhythm Paradise Groove is the perfect cushion to soften the blow; it’s accessible, friendly and offers just the right amount of challenge, without being too overwhelming or intense. There’s a whole heap of unlockables and different game modes that keep things fresh and entertaining, and the rhythms and songs throughout the game are bound to have you toe-tapping all the way through. Some may be put off by the latency between the TV and controller input, but even after a while its something that you can adjust to, so there’s always positives to play off.

Rhythm Heaven Groove lives up to the expectations longtime fans have had for the series. With higher-quality songs, familiar yet flexible stage formats, and highly replayable bonus modes, it brought back memories of grinding for medals on the Nintendo DS and Wii. For rhythm game fans, it is undoubtedly the most fitting first-party send-off for the Nintendo Switch generation.

While its repetitive structure means it isn't always a game you'll play for hours at a time, it's one that's incredibly easy to return to whenever you're looking for a few minutes of fun. Whether you're a longtime fan or someone discovering the series for the first time, this is an easy recommendation for Nintendo Switch owners of all ages. Rhythm Heaven Groove is a triumphant return from a decade-and-a-half hibernation. While it struggles to abandon some of the archaic visual design the series has grown attached to, the juiced-up soundtrack, consistently strong rhythm games, and wonderfully intriguing Beatspell RPG have me believing that this series has the legs to carry the music into the modern age.
Rhythm Heaven Groove is a perfect example of the wonderfully weird side of Nintendo. With its colourful presentation of wacky characters, upbeat soundtrack of catchy earworms, gameplay that’s easy to learn but hard to master, and modes that surpass expectations of both quantity and quality for the price, heaven is a place on Nintendo Switch.
Rhythm Heaven is fundamentally different to other rhythm games, and Rhythm Paradise Groove is no different. It might seem both whimsical and bonkers from the aesthetics and general energy of the game, and it is that, but it’s also an enormously clever project that subtly helps you develop very real rhythm skills.

Every mode, every song and every odd little scenario feels touched by a team that genuinely enjoys the craft of rhythm, and that enthusiasm seeps through the screen. This is the sort of game that quietly raises the bar for what a rhythm title can be, not through spectacle, but through an unshakeable commitment to making every beat matter.
Rhythm Heaven Groove is a highly distinctive rhythm game that delights with its ideas, music and absurd humour, but doesn’t set out to appeal to everyone. Its simple controls conceal a challenging experience that demands full concentration, a sense of rhythm and a constant drive to improve your scores. Fans of the series and of Nintendo’s more unconventional titles will have a brilliant time, whilst others may lose interest after just a few minutes.

The WarioWare of rhythm games, Rhythm Paradise Groove offers up a series of joyful minigames that all test your ability to keep a rhythm. It's challenging, but the nature of the minigames means it's very easy to keep trying until practice makes perfect.
There’s nothing quite like it when it comes to charm and inventiveness making this a default buy even if not every game hits.
