HomepageGoomba Stomp's Reviews
Hollow Knight is a charming, atmospheric effort which takes the Metroidvania style of games to new heights, evolving its inspiration to a experience that's simply a lot of fun to play. It's brutally difficult at times, perfect for those who love a good challenge nad dislike hand-holding, and its various strategic elements bring in a lot of variety. Hollow Knight's aim is on-point, and then some.
It's enough to say that Captain Spirit is every bit as moving and charming as you'd expect from a Life is Strange game. What's more, it augurs extremely well for the upcoming sequel which, at the time of writing, is only a couple of months away.
SpiritSphere DX is a good game. Its colorful cast of characters and catchy, earworm soundtrack are all-around inviting and pleasant. The core gameplay (and, for my money, the addicting Squash Mode) is fun alone or with a friend. However, the general lack of single player content and a few disappointing design decisions keep it from being a must-have.
'Figment' wants to tap into the limitless potential of the mind, but ultimately comes up with a safe, mostly uninspired puzzle adventure. Rich music and some clever brain-teasers highlight the 4-5 hours of gameplay, but tedious mechanics and solutions, as well as repetitive visuals that can't quite capture the imagination, keep the game from realizing its full potential.
As the first DLC from the Far Cry 5 season pass, Hours of Darkness, is somewhat underwhelming; but that is not a reflection on the quality or quantity of the content it provides.
This is one of the best installments in the Mario Tennis series if only for the amount of content it offers. It doesn’t get everything right but regardless, it makes a great addition to the Switch library.
Sushi Striker wears its 3DS roots on its sleeve, but the core gameplay is addicting and the production values (minus the overworld) are top notch. Though it might appear like a high-end mobile game, this is the full-fledged real deal. If you don't mind dealing with a few pacing issues, this is easy to recommend to anyone who enjoys deep puzzle games.
Truthfully, the quality of Sega Genesis Classics is almost wholly dependant on one's own taste in 16-bit-ness. Those with a burning adoration for the titles on offer will have a complete and utter blast with this retro offering, and maybe even newbies can find a thing or two to smile about. Despite its minor flaws, Sega Genesis Classics is what it is: An simple but effective compilation at a decent price.
Dark Souls Remastered is hands-down the definitive edition of one of the most influential games of the previous generation, and an absolute must-play for series late-comers who may have missed it the first time around. Vastly improved and technically superior, Dark Souls Remastered renders the original version obsolete by comparison.
For a first attempt at porting a Football Manager game onto the Nintendo Switch, it has been relatively successful. It just lacks comfortable controls and a screen that works on the portability of the Switch. The streamlined gameplay is fantastic though and produces a complex football management experience that any football fan could quickly master
In 'Moonlighter', you take on the role of Will, a young shopkeeper with dreams to restore his town to it's former glory. To do this, he must descend into the ancient and mysterious dungeons and unearth the secrets they hold.
The Banner Saga is a marvel as a personalized adventure game. The experience of leading a caravan and constantly making impactful choices that directly decide their fates is one that I'll never forget (and one that I look forward to continuing in Banner Saga 2). However, though its SRPG elements are generally good fun, they're not quite as polished (or balanced) as the rest of the package.
For Castlevania veterans and newcomers alike, Curse of the Moon is a simple and sweet gem that serves not just as a tribute but a fitting continuation of this very specific kind of game. It's not a clone, rather an appropriate successor.
Battlechasers: Nightwar is a fun rpg that benefits from the mythos that the original comics created. The characters are enjoyable, the world is teeming with personality, and the combat is both challenging and rewarding. There’s enough content here to keep most rpg fans happy, especially if they plan to complete the dungeons on the hardest difficulty level. Newcomers to the franchise will have no trouble getting into this one.
A nearly perfect adventure, taking the best from years of RPG experience and creating a massive game with loads to do.
Goetia is a classic horror game. It's unnerving, skin-crawling, with a dash of eerie music that keeps your soul on edge. The puzzles are some of the most challenging in any point and click game, so this isn't a game for the casual gamer. Some minor bugs that can become a slight nuisance to the overall experience, but not enough to spoil the game.
While Destiny 2: Warmind doesn't solve all of the title's problems, it's a refreshing change from the barren landscape the game had become prior to the expansion. Warmind gives more to do and restores the familiar itch to log in every day and complete some quests or grind missions. If you left Destiny 2 out of boredom or a lack of content, then Warmind might offer enough engaging content to warrant a return. Flawed as it may be, Warmind is still enjoyable overall and a step in the right direction for the future of the franchise as a whole.
Omensight has a lot going for it. The central murder mystery is genuinely captivating and the combat has a fluidity that just feels damn good. An eye-catching world is populated by equally colorful and memorable characters. To its credit, Omensight manages to somewhat avoid the repetition associated with looping narratives but not completely, and it's that fault that brings the entire experience just ever so lower.
Ever felt like building your own horror mansion, luring victims in, and then... dealing with them? 'Machiavillain' puts you in the shoes of a minion who does just that!
Earthlock is a fantastic adventure and a very polished RPG. Fans of the genre will fall in love with the game. It draws on a lot of good RPG elements and it really feels like Snowcastle are fans of the genre themselves.
