9 / 10.0 - For Honor
Feb 23, 2017

For Honor is an ambitious IP that hit the blade right in the jugular, creating a beautiful new combat system, character in its various roles and factions, and an underlying amount of depth and customization that contributes to an engaging multiplayer experience with tons of replayability. If you've wondered what it's like to hold a 5 foot long sword, For Honor is going to be your best chance at feeling the intimacy of dueling with histories deadliest warriors.

9 / 10.0 - Nioh
Feb 16, 2017

In conclusion, Nioh is a confident and engaging action RPG that wears cultural pride on its sleeve like a badge of honor. An absolutely absorbing time sink that continues to reward and challenge the further and further you go. A masterful return to form for the action chops of Team Ninja, one that I will gladly return to with love even as it pounds me into powder.

9 / 10.0 - SUPERHOT (VR)
Aug 30, 2017

Superhot VR is fast, action-filled, and addictive. It's one of the few VR games that truly makes you feel a part of the action, and while the aiming mechanics can be poor at times, the game more than makes up for it in fun and flair. If you liked Superhot or are looking for the pinnacle of where VR games are at at the moment, Superhot VR won't let you down.

If you bought Shovel Knight when it came out and loved every minute of it, Specter of Torment is a fantastic reason to return to this world and its characters. Sharp gameplay, taut worldbuilding, and brimming with personality, this is a trip to the dark side that is worth taking.

9 / 10.0 - Loot Rascals
Apr 7, 2017

Luckily, Loot Rascals is so charming that the permadeath is much less of a frustration than it is in most roguelikes. The world is bright and colorful, and there’s always a collection of new, laughably weird monsters to battle. Many of the cards you pick up are humorous too like a salt sock that prevents you from slipping on ice or an inflatable pool toy for a weapon. The game is like a cartoon version of Red Dwarf by way of Adult Swim.

Glitches aside, Cosmic Star Heroine is one of those pleasant experiences made by a talented smaller studio that revels in gaming's roots. All at once a homage and a refinement of classic RPGs with just enough heart and imagination to rope in players of any age or skill.

Middle Earth: Shadow of War is a game unlike anything before it. The already excellent systems introduced in its predecessor have been made better in every way with new consequences and rewarding wrinkles.

9 / 10.0 - Vostok Inc.
Jan 15, 2018

Vostok Inc. is one of the year's most addicting games, seamlessly combining two genres into a beautifully executed sci-fi capitalism shooter. It's not all that robust or complex, but the sheer thrills will get your inner money goblin going, and once that happens, there's no coming back.

9 / 10.0 - Nidhogg 2
Aug 22, 2017

Given that this game shares such a strong base with its predecessor, it'd be easy to get whether or not this is a sequel or a rehash, but the point is that Nidhogg did what it did perfectly and enjoyably. It was a simple game and concept that was best unadorned and uncluttered with other mechanics, modes, etc. Nidhogg 2 is fully aware of that and instead of changing what already works. It adds more in ways that don't detract from the core of the game, instead choosing to give it a healthy dose of identity, character and zany atmosphere that will stick with you much longer than bland colored square men in basic environments. It plays beautifully and the quick kills and high tension matches make for a perfect two-player experience.

It all boils down to a simple conclusion. If you love fighting large dragons and dinosaurs, playing with friends, and enjoy a lighthearted experience full of pulpy action, you will love Monster Hunter World. The story presented isn't exactly one for the ages and there are some nitpicks to be found with the control scheme, but it's a game that sinks its teeth into you and doesn't let go.

9 / 10.0 - Hand of Fate 2
Feb 5, 2018

This universe is ripe for additions and if the attention to detail can be maintained as well as refinements to its “less is more” design approach, the fate of this game's universe seems to be in great hands.

9 / 10.0 - Guacamelee! 2

Guacamelee! 2 contains everything I loved from the first iteration and builds upon the foundation. DrinkBox Studios kept the elements that worked so well in the game, like platforming, combat, visuals, and great music.

If you don't normally play adventure games, Roki is not a bad place to start. It's a beautiful world with a beautiful story. There are some challenges when it comes to staying on track but that can lead to cool discoveries.

9 / 10.0 - Spellbreak
Dec 7, 2020

With the addition of new game modes and a quest system, Spellbreak continues to improve on the base game. Proletariat has done a great job at creating a platform for a game. They have left a lot of space for expansion in the future. The art style is beautiful and bright. There are a ton of character skins to unlock but I wish that a single character could be customized with more detail. A lot has gone into the making of Spellbreak and the future is looking bright for this title. We can’t wait to see what comes next.

9 / 10.0 - Hitman 3
Jan 19, 2021

I have not always been the biggest fan of the Hitman series because I was so bad at the stealth genre. Over time, IO Interactive has done a great job opening up its world. Hitman has now become more accessible while maintaining its challenge. Like always, the game looks and feels great. The controls and different gameplay mechanics are easy to learn for those that are new to the genre. I am really glad that IO Interactive decided to go with a true story mode in Hitman 3. The episodic content was not bad but I think that the last iteration in the series deserved a true storyline. IO Interactive has really shown what their studio is capable of when it comes to graphics, level design, and story. With all of the content included in this package, this is a great place for new players to jump in. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for their 007 game.
