- Elli
Jan 22, 2019

Despite the gameplay variety in the different worlds, Elli unfortunately offers too little to stand out from the crowd. If you liked the shrines in the last Zelda and if you like a light version of them, you can take a look and won't do much wrong. Thanks to a very easy level of difficulty and the lack of fights, Elli is unlikely to offer enough entertainment value to everyone else.

Double Cross doesn't do anything bad as a Jump'n'Run, but has hardly any charm, can't set its own mark in any way and is hardly worth mentioning on the Nintendo Switch compared to the strong competition.

- GRIS
Dec 20, 2018

After Journey and Abzu, Gris is another extraordinary trip into a fascinating virtual world, which will stay in your head long after the finale - and, unlike the other two, also has playful qualities. Congratulations to Nomada Studio on this great debut project and a worthy end to the game year! Gris takes us on a four-hour emotional journey into a magical world whose colours, images and sounds hypnotize - and which, in addition to its audiovisual attractions, can also entertain us with interesting puzzles and games.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is a very good strategy game and I had a lot of fun with it during the whole season. The fights are challenging (also for veterans of the genre), the story is interesting and exploring the zone is rewarded with new weapons and better equipment. The only thing I'd like to see in the next part of the series is a little more content. Apart from the campaign and a few occasional trips to secondary areas, there's not much to get.

This trip to Kanto is more than just a return: Game Freak and the Pokémon Company are finally taking their first small steps into the future and making Pokémon more open, lively and modern. This is the way to go!

The few deep and very well written quests unfortunately get lost in the paper and terminal clutter. The loss of human NPCs is a bitter blow to the apocalypse. But the game world is filled with so much love, details and little stories that it would be quite ignorant not to visit the shooter RPG again. Maybe in a month or two, when the biggest bugs have been fixed and the first DLC has been released.

Starlink has a good playful foundation, but it has been sacrificed to a generic Open World approach and rampant recycling. Atlas is all about mass instead of class - it's a shame about the great Toys-to-Life approach.

Cybarian is an entertaining, crisp retro platformer with a loving look, a cool soundtrack and some nice details. The just four varied levels can be solved by experienced players in well under an hour; in the first round of the game it probably takes two to three hours, depending on your skill, to learn and master all the mechanisms and traps. Considering that the game is available for less than 5 Euro, this is okay from my point of view. If you're in the mood for a bit of crunchy pixel art action again, you won't go wrong with Cybarian.

The Football Manager 2019 by Sports Interactive shows up with few innovations and surprises. The well-known formula still works, but this must not excuse why new features like the revised training do not work properly. The Football Manager still has the charm of a spreadsheet, with an old-fashioned graphics engine and new bugs. Fans will have their fun with Football Manager 2019, which despite all its weaknesses is the best version yet. However, Sports Interactive will not make the step into the mainstream with this game.

Pulsating beats, cool sayings, fashion as armor and the Joy-Con as pointer: The World Ends With You works very well on the Nintendo Switch despite the lack of precision in battle and will continue to impress in 2018 with its gripping story and incomparable style - whether you experience the adventure in TV or handheld mode.

Luigi's first appearance as a ghost hunter hasn't lost any of his charm and is still a great pleasure in 2018 - but he's clearly the loser compared to his successor on the same console.

Shenmue I and II are clearly games of their time, and many newcomers will find it hard to understand the fascination of these games. But for me it was a celebration of joy to to stroll again through the dreamy streets of Yokosuka, or to fight my way through a skyscraper in Hong Kong. Sure, the 18-year-old hothead Ryo sometimes steers himself like a tank, and yes, the story has its lengths and the presentation its weaknesses. Nevertheless, todays games rarely offer such an atmosphere, credibility, immersion and charm. Shenmue I & II ultimately became exactly what I wanted it to be: A worthy remaster for fans.

Although Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 is giving away potential in many respects, it is convincing on the pitch once again, so that annoyed FIFA players are welcome to consider a change.

Apart from the almost forced grinding and the microtransactions behind it, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is the hammer! The sheer size of the world, the interesting and mostly very entertaining quests as well as the attention to detail make this game a real gem. For days I sneaked through enemy fortresses, killed leaders, chased wild beasts, climbed mountains and never got bored. The varied possibilities and well written dialogues were always very entertaining. I particularly liked Socrates with his stories and poems. Ubisoft can do that easily. The world holds you captive and it's very hard to get away from it. The "Just one more mission" principle opens up again and causes dark circles in the eyes on the next working day. And the humor ... I can't emphasize it enough. The little gags and Easter Eggs for attentive players (visual or sound) made me laugh a few times. Considering that I had mostly focused on the story and had already spent 40 hours in the country, you can imagine what it means to complete all the side missions, special tasks and hidden puzzles. If you want to get a lot of gameplay for your money, you can hit here without hesitation!

Sinner steals ideas and art design from From Software and also fails on almost all other levels with a sluggish, delayed combat system, a miserable camera and bad technology. Nobody needs this cheap copy.

In Octopath Traveler there is a lot of love and passion, you can tell at first sight. Octopath Traveler is a beautiful, fairytale-like diorama that recalls the classics of the genre time and again, but lacks the essential framework to bring the pieces together into a harmonious whole. The beautiful presentation and the great fighting system are contrasted by eight independent stories whose quality varies greatly - and which hardly suffice as motivation for 80 hours of playing time.

The Voxel Agents have managed to knit a clever game concept around time manipulation with only one key plus analog stick and completely without text, which not only becomes a bit more complex from level to level, but also hardly repeats itself. If you don't mind the short playing time, The Gardens Between is a wonderfully playful and pretty puzzle adventure that's perfect for in between.

I enjoyed the espionage setting, the turn-based stealth action, and the assembly of the puzzle pieces. I often had a hard time getting off the screen because I just wanted to solve this one case quickly or started another mission quickly. If patches are applied here and a little more time is invested in the next title, an up-and-coming game forge could celebrate its final breakthrough.
