GOOD - My Time At Portia is a charming attempt at the Simulation RPG genre. While it has its fair share of flaws that make the game difficult to get into at first, the experience beyond the entry point is nothing short of rewarding. There’s a sincere charm to this game that you don’t often find.
WORTH CONSIDERING - I had high hopes for Trüberbrook. With its unique graphics, surreal setting, and sci-fi point-and-click adventure I figured it would be right up my alley. Unfortunately clunky and slow controls combined with so-so puzzles and uninteresting dialog made for a slightly above average affair.
GREAT - Reigns: Game of Thrones is a clever choose your own adventure-styled title with highly accessible mechanics and a very robust dynamic narrative experience. Fans of the series will find a lot of canon to play around with and forge their own paths not seen before. Although not part of our typical rating system, I’ve given a higher total score also primarily due to the staggeringly low price point of $3.99, making it the perfect companion game to enjoy the last season with.
MEDIOCRE - Undead’s Building is a neat and quirky concept that just wasn’t taken far enough. The gameplay gets stale fast, and the lack of content doesn’t help that. There are some charming aspects, but this one needed more development time to become something truly special.
EXCELLENT - So many developers try to ape the Zelda formula and most fail. Hob: The Definitive Edition is one of the few that succeeds and delivers a fun and entertaining action/adventure experience that is both unique and exciting. A few performance issues can’t hold back an otherwise excellent game that belongs on your Switch home screen.
WORTH CONSIDERING - Neo Atlas 1469 is a simulator that shares a lot with graphic novels. You’ll be setting up trade routes, discovering new lands, and hunting for treasure. This is such a niche genre that not everyone will find enjoyment here, but it’s worth considering for those who love this style of gameplay or for those who are new to the genre.
GOOD - Bow to Blood: Last Captain Standing delivers an immersive airship combat experience coupled with relationship drama and alliance building with your arena opponents. The thematic premise of this being broadcast similar to a show of Survivor works to the game’s favor and creates added decision making apart from the core gameplay. Not enough randomness leads to some repetition after a few seasons, but the game is still very fun to play!
WORTH CONSIDERING - The Princess Guide is fun at first, overwhelmingly complicated overall, and a little weird to be scolding or praising princesses in their training. It has some great points like crazy button mashing combat, but also has clunky menus and severely repetitive gameplay.
GOOD - Yoshi’s Crafted World is creative in its set designs, but could have used some fresh ideas in the gameplay department. The game is still really fun to play, although it seems a little on the short side, unless you’re OK with playing the levels three times through to find all of the collectibles. A solid effort from Good-Feel and Nintendo, but I was hoping for more.
GOOD - Claybook lives up to the creative freedom that it promises, but lacks some polish that it really needed. The creative mode goes above and beyond what you expect from it, with the well-needed community feature. However, the mixed visual quality, lack of music variety, and other small issues should be well noted before you delve into its artistic world.
GREAT - Assault Android Cactus+ is a great highlight of the twin-stick shooter genre on the Switch. Both newcomers and veterans will find something to like here with the variety of game modes on tap. A great deal of fun is waiting to be had here, whether playing solo or with friends in couch co-op.
EXCELLENT - Inti Creates does it again with Blaster Master Zero 2! This sequel is filled with all sorts of new gameplay mechanics that are really fun to mess around with. There’s a lot of areas to explore and abilities to learn that will help mitigate the game’s somewhat high difficulty curve.
MEDIOCRE - Blood Waves might satisfy some zombie aficionados, but most gamers have seen and played better games in this genre. The lack of polish, tedious grinding, and high difficulty make this game an easy one to pass up. For the $10 price it’s not horrible, but with so many other great games near the same price point, it’s hard to recommend this one.
MEDIOCRE - If you’re already a fan of Legacy Wars on mobile and absolutely need more of it in your life, this will definitely satisfy. Its limited features and lack of any real progression however, make it a hard pass for anyone outside that audience. There is a ridiculously good fighting game at its core, but it is suffering from a significant lack of polish in virtually every other department. An iconic name like Power Rangers deserves a far better console outing than this, and hopefully Hasbro wises up to this before they do something even crazier like try to port their mobile Diablo clone Power Rangers All-Stars.
GOOD - Fate/Extella Link features lots of improvements over the previous release, but it still suffers from some of the pitfalls the last title had and does have a steep learning curve for those unfamiliar with the franchise. Hack and slash action aficionados will find a lot to like here!
MEDIOCRE - Ultrawings ports over a VR flight game to the Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately the developers didn’t tweak the controls to fit the platform, so there are some odd gameplay elements. A lack of a map means you’ll really have to enjoy your time flying over large swaths of water to reach possible destinations. Only a few event types means a redundant experience pretty early on. Flying felt good and respective of the different aircraft, but with only 4 total planes to use and lengthy unlock requirements to get them, there’s just not the right balance to make this games soar.
GREAT - Whether you’re looking for a serious Final Fantasy experience, or looking to have a fun time with an adorable fluffy yellow bird, you’re going to need this game in your Switch library. The game features bright and colorful graphics and charming characters, and yet somehow manages to marry them with challenging gameplay. Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon Every Buddy is a great fit for the Switch!
GREAT - Unravel Two is a charming game with compelling level design and fun gameplay mechanics. This isn’t your typical action-platform experience, as you’ll encounter plenty of small puzzles to solve to progress though the stages. Another great game for the Switch!
BAD - Awesome Pea is an action-platformer that lacks any form of passion. Zero creativity, poor music, and forgettable level designs make this one an easy “NO” for most gamers.
GREAT - Rico is a high adrenaline action FPS that plays well and features plenty of single player and co-op content. If you’re looking for competitive PvP you’ll have to look elsewhere, but for everyone else this one’s a blast!
