Merge Games did the best it could while still staying true to the original, which ultimately provides the advertised nostalgia trip and a pretty gorgeous facelift as well. It’s just a bummer that the whole appeal of the package, being an update to Miracle World, is also what holds it back from being a great game in 2021.
There’s still a lot to appreciate about Of Bird and Cage, such as the music, the tone, the desire to do something like what we almost saw. Hopefully, this isn’t the last from the developers as I respect the drive, but slow down, pull it back, work with the good ideas, and don’t let the music go flat again.
While Jujutsu Kaisen Cursed Clash doesn't reach the highs of CyberConnect2's anime fighting games, it has a lot of interesting ideas and offers plenty of fan service for JJK diehards.

But that bar is pathetically low as the five console horror games following that unexpected 2015 hit have been all mediocre or downright terrible. House of Ashes is getting close enough to the surface to see sunlight beaming through the cracked bits of earth above, but it’s still stuck underground.
What started out as a humble new series has expanded into something much more ambitious. But while that ambition is admirable and sometimes extraordinary, it’s also the root cause of many of its problems since it lacks focus and seems like Asobo spread itself thin going this much larger.
Dragon Ball: The Breakers is a fantastic idea that is currently let down by a real need for extra polish and content. The core loop is interesting but with little variation, unsightly landscapes, and some terrible technical problems, the game’s potential is firmly capped.
Prodeus travels down well-worn territory but does so covered in substantially more red (and blue) goo. Its mix of modern effects and retro visuals coalesce well and give it enough of its own identity that’s bolstered by its buckets of blood.

Trek to Yomi’s gameplay woes — as well as the stunning lack of a chapter select feature — drag the experience down and mean that its swordplay is not nearly as sharp as its presentation.

Dealing with Tiny Tina’s humor for 20 or so hours isn’t always easy to swallow and may not be for everyone, but the gameplay is rewarding enough that even those that wind up moving the dialogue audio slider down to zero will have a good time.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a more than passable first attempt for a studio that has newly transitioned to video games. It’s a visually stunning world that is occasionally calming to poke around in. However, it’s still very evident that it is from a team that’s new to the medium, given all of its gameplay inadequacies and narrative missteps. There are glimmers of a truly great experience in here, but it’s hard to see underneath the spots of rot at the core. And unlike the little Rot wisps in the game, it’s not cute as it robs the game of its potential.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade: Wrath of the Mutants is a colorful romp that never bores or overstays its welcome.
Fort Solis isn't without its issues, but the sci-fi adventure game tells an interesting mystery and is unafraid to deal with ambiguity. Troy Baker puts on a marvelous performance that is likely the year's best in video games, and he has enough compelling material for it not to be wasted.
