Critic Reviews for Asterix & Obelix XXL Romastered

Some games demand a remaster, to be brought bang up to date for an entirely new audience to find and enjoy. Asterix & Obelix XXL is not one of those games. In 2003 it was a solid, if unremarkable, effort. Now, seventeen years later, it just feels entirely unnecessary, with drab combat, pointless collectables and frustrating challenges. If you really need an Asterix and Obelix fix, best just go back and reread the comics I'd say.

Too many technical problems spoil a good remastered job. The lovers of the original game will appreciate this simple game ideal to play with kids.

Asterix & Obelix XXL: Romastered shows the weight of 17 years in its ancient gameplay structure, plagued by glitches and significant frame rate drops.

Therefore, this update of Asterix & Obelix XXL is, first of all, a gift to those who enjoyed the original in its day and want to relive this journey with better graphics and if they have a switch, in a portable way.

As you can expect, the game features the same adventure as the original, let's see together if the developers have managed to do the work necessary to give a breath of fresh air to this not exactly young game. Overall, the work done by Microids in bringing this old title up to date is truly admirable.

Asterix & Obelix XXL: Romastered is a good example of how to do a remastering, with some playable novelties that fit perfectly as if they were always there and with the option to enjoy the adventure in original mode, changing on the fly from one mode to another , a great extra that is appreciated. But it has also come with vices of the original title, like a very crazy camera, understandable in 2003, to which we will have to get used to. With this title we already have the XXL trilogy of Asterix and Obelix in the current generation, and we hope they continue for a while around here.

In addition to the gameplay mechanisms, the level design looks also obsolete and worst of all, it is very repetitive.

Asterix and Obélix XXL Romastered is a great tribute to its 2003 original, taking all the good it had and giving us a graphic section updated to the current era that feels great. It is a short game, which in about 10-12 hours you can have it finished, but you will enjoy them one after another with its platform style and its continuous references to the Goscinny and Uderzo comics. Especially recommended for fans of cartoons, but also for the little ones in the house.
