Critic Reviews for Micetopia

This exploration platformer pulls off the essentials, but the amount of time spent backtracking and grinding for upgrades feels much more wasteful rather than satisfying. Micetopia wound up slightly disappointing, but I've seen enough positives that I have some optimism for the studio's next release.

Micetopia is a fun simple Metroidvania that plays everything very safe. Good controls, graphics and a short campaign that feels over a little too soon. The definition of what I have come to call a coffee game. But by playing it safe Micetopia doesn’t have that special something that makes it stand out from the crowd. If you’re looking for a nice short title at a nice price, this will keep you distracted for a few play sessions.

Rich's adventure in Mycetopia is recommended for all players. With simple and accessible narrative and gameplay, without many flourishes, this timid metroidvania entertains in the right measure, even if it leaves something to be desired. However, it is the typical case of "take it or leave it": just as it attracts those looking for casual experiences, it can turn off enthusiasts of the metroidvania genre.

Micetopia offers a mixed result, in which we see how good ideas and intentions are mixed with a long list of design flaws that lead to a game that could have given much more of itself. It has an adequate duration for what this type of game usually offers, but its repetitiveness ends up taking its toll.

Metroidvanias in the vein of classics from the 8 and 16-bit eras have become pretty common over the years on Switch, so in order to really break away from the crowd it can take a fair amount of effort...
