Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a game whose only real sin is having been beaten to the punch by Mario and Sonic. Each event plays well and is backed up with solid presentation, tight controls and AI that offers a proper challenge when against you, while having your back when on your team. Add to that a soundtrack that feels properly encouraging and some solid reasons to keep trudging at the elusive medals and you have a solid title that clearly wasn’t rushed by any stretch. That said, if you prefer your sports to be on the realistic side, or you want things even wackier with a touch of spiky hedgehog, this probably isn’t the game for you. For everyone else – go for gold!

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game is a collection of sport games that perfectly capture the essence of the old Track ‘n Field series, mixed with the easygoing sport games from 20 years ago. The game is not perfect by any means, and the lack of depth does make it an ill-fit for lone players. But if you are looking for a fun and competitive yet easy to play sports game for both family and friends – this is it.

In an era where arcade titles are few and far between, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game serves as a reminder that SEGA is still the champion of effervescent sports games. A varied selection of events, each with their own addictive gameplay mechanics, makes for an entertaining package with plenty to see and do. Pair this with a vibrant artstyle and some decent online options, and you've got the gold standard in athletics right here.

While the games were delayed by the global pandemic, now that the summer games are coming (well, perhaps not given the situation in Japan, but stick with me) there must be an inevitable video game form of the events...

Fun at face-value with significant underlying depth, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game bursts off the blocks at lightning speed and doesn't break stride, pushing for gold and delivering a fun experience along the way. With clean and crisp visuals and gameplay that's easy to learn and more intense to master, the only jarring thing about it is seeing crowds of people huddled together in the audience – but that could be the 2020 shellshock speaking.

With that caveat in mind, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game is a fun way to while away a few hours. Its straightforward pick-up-and-play nature makes it ideal for when you just fancy a bit of arcade-style fun — or a bit of friendly competition. Its distinctive Sega polish means that it looks, sounds and plays great, too.

Whether your idea of fun comes in the form of single player, co-op, or multiplayer, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 does have you covered there. At times, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is everything I hoped it would be, but in the end it comes up a bit short of gold or even silver. But hey, a bronze medal is still a medal.

It's clearly a simple, familiar and intuitive approach to the Olympic Games, being a perfect complement to follow our favorite athletes and sports. Don't expect nothing as complex as FIFA, PES or the NBA for example, but rather a title to be played in fast rounds with friends or family. And in that it's quite competent.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game is, in all honesty, quite fun. While there are a few depressing omissions, the disciplines featured are all fun and easy to play and enjoy. The game leaves enough space for more to be added in the future, while having just enough variation in gameplay to keep the included sports from feeling too similar. The stylised approach to the games aesthetic is quirky and fun, and it removes the pressure photorealistic designs often put on sports titles. The way it mimics the real-life Olympics, complete with roster and schedule, is a nice touch that will incentivise players to return to see if they can be the best in the world, while the solo modes ensure players have something to do while they wait. The game is by no means sophisticated and nuanced, and it is as far removed from a simulation title as the astronaut outfit you can wear while doing a Hammer Throw; but it is quite a bit of fun. The sheer accessibility in the title is a breath of fresh air among the dozens of sports games trying to simulate every facet of their focused disciplines; making the game a good experience for even the most inexperienced of players.
