Taken for what it is, Tokyo 2020 works well enough to carve a niche for itself as a surprisingly fun and easy to pick-up multiplayer game for families and parties.

It can be fun with friends, but the lack of depth makes the game feel dull and boring way sooner than it should.

Comparing Tokyo 2020 to Mario & Sonic is not only unavoidable, it's also just weird. Mario & Sonic released in November 2019, and while Tokyo 2020 was always going to release a little later it was delayed a full year due to the real life Olympics being postponed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. With more than a year and half gap between the two video games, it's bizarre that the one that had so much longer to be worked on ends up feeling more rushed and lacking in comparison to its counterpart. Tokyo 2020 would be tough to recommend on its own merits, but placed next to Mario & Sonic there really doesn't seem to be any reason to choose the "Official" Olympic Games.

You can feel Sega's spirit everywhere in this arcade Olympics simulator, and even though the 18 different included sports doesn not offer much gameplay depth, it's still super fun to play especially if you can hook up with some other players online.

A good arcade option for sports, but it's shallow and quickly loses its coolness.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Video Game is comprised of a very watered down collection of minigames that offer just a few fleeting moments of fun. Fans looking for something casual might as well pick up the Mario & Sonic spinoff instead - and even so, temper your expectations.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game is fun, especially when played with a friend. While some events aren’t as engaging as others, there’s enough variety here that everyone will find something they can enjoy or excel at. The huge range of outfits available to unlock gives completionists a reason to keep going back, but most players will find this best enjoyed in short bursts.

With that caveat in mind, Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 – The Official Video Game is a fun way to while away a few hours. Its straightforward pick-up-and-play nature makes it ideal for when you just fancy a bit of arcade-style fun — or a bit of friendly competition. Its distinctive Sega polish means that it looks, sounds and plays great, too.

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game is fine. It would've been nice to get some of the events from the Mario & Sonic series ported over to make this feel more robust compared to Sega's older Olympics titles, but what's here plays well enough if you don't mind some quirks - especially with the team games. The focus on multiplayer is warranted, since that's how the general public will approach it, but it would've been nice if there were more for the solo player to do. If you're looking for a party game and not a serious multi-discipline sports simulation, this isn't a bad choice.

As everyone knows, I love Japan. I'm also a die hard fan of the Olympics, and a person that sets up four or five screens as the Olympics runs in order to watch as many different events as possible. I've been looking forward to both Tokyo 2020 Olympics ever since the country won the opportunity to host the event, and this game more than satisfies me as a fan of all of the above. Once again, import it, as it is fully localised in English, and if you ever see a green, twin-tailed girl setting records while looking awesome in a school uniform, be sure to send me a digital wave.

It's easy to see how a fan of past Olympics games could be put off by Tokyo 2020, but if you're willing to lean into its arcade tendencies, you can have a lot of fun with it. The games are enjoyable for the most part, the presentation is great, and there's enough depth to keep you playing longer than just a few rounds of each sport. It certainly won't be for everyone, but SEGA's willingness to be bold and divert away from the simulation-heavy focus of previous Olympics games makes Tokyo 2020 a refreshingly memorable competitor that deserves some attention.

‎Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: The official video game does its homework half-heartedly: it deprives us of some essential Olympic sports and others do not have the necessary quality.‎

As one of the better Olympic Video Games, Tokyo 2020 provides a lot of fun whether you prefer playing solo, with a friend, or with folks online. Also, not all of its events may be gold medal worthy but its charming presentation certainly is.

While the games were delayed by the global pandemic, now that the summer games are coming (well, perhaps not given the situation in Japan, but stick with me) there must be an inevitable video game form of the events...

Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is a mixture of sports events, some are fun and some are disappointing, but the competition with friends was somewhat fun, in my opinion, SEGA could have possibly done something better.
