While the genre struggled in the early days on the Switch, the beat-em-up has proven to be alive and well on the Switch, including some titles I'd consider genre-defining that have arrived over the last 2 years...

This is not going to make you stop playing Streets of Rage 4 or cancel your preorder for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game, but damn, am I glad this exists. Asterix & Obelix: Slap Them All is really easy and can be really repetitive at times, but it’s lovely to look at and listen to. The fact it’s so easy makes each combat section even funnier, all thanks to some of the best animations I’ve seen in a game in a while.

Asterix and Obelix Slap'em All is a charming beat'em all which still lacks of depth too keep the enjoyment on the long run. Despite its gorgeous look and animation, the repetitiveness of the 50 levels and simple gameplay aim for a young audience more than the average street fighter.

It's a stunning homage to the original comics that will excite fans whilst being a great way to introduce newcomers to the series. The game is lacking some much-needed depth, and even though it's a good length, there are still many missing features that are synonymous with the beat 'em up genre.

Asterix & Obelix: Slap Them All! it is a game of contrasts. If you look at it as a tribute to the comics of Uderzo and Goscinny, it has a lot of charm; if you look at it as beat'em up, it looks like a Gaul who has forgotten to take the magic potion before messing with a Roman.

Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All! is a classic 2D beat 'em up with impeccable graphics but lacks playability that is too flat, simple and can easily fall into repetition. It still gets to be fun and offers generous length for the game genre it belongs to, so every fan of Uderzo and Goscinny's characters should give it a try.

Asterix and Obelix: Slap Them All! is a game I would play with my younger siblings. It is a simplistic brawler that becomes repetitive after going through a few acts, but has great visuals and shows the surprising amount of charm such an old series carries today. There are certainly better beat-em-up options out there, but I did find this game more fun than the recent Battletoads, so I think that says something.

We've really appreciated the return of Goscinny & Uderzo's creature in videogame with this Asterix & Obelix Slap Them All. Choosing an arcade beat'em up was a fitting idea, and the decision to merge it with an exquisite hand-drawn graphic was the best way to start a new beginning for Asterix in modern gaming. However, the game reuses too much assets throughout the adventure and it's victim of its own repetitiveness, which prevents him to reach higher scores. Perhaps the masterpiece is not on sight, but the Gauls have taken the right road to reach it.
