Critic Reviews for Mr. Prepper

Mr. Prepper is a slow-paced but absorbing survival game with a focus on building relationships, which rewards the grind with an increasingly bizarre nuclear plan.

With a storyline that is clearly angry at western values, Mr. Prepper can do nothing but try and stand out with a story that comes at the sacrifice of compelling gameplay. The attempts to challenge with a forced playstyle may turn off potential window shoppers.

Mr. Prepper has decent graphics, a fun throughline for a story, and really opens up in terms of actions the further on you go. Yet it’s the needing to do it in such a limited window, both for the auto-save countdown and the lack of mouse, that keep it from being something that I’d come back to time and again. I might consider picking it up on the computer in the future, but I don’t think anyone should be playing it on the Switch. It’s just not what the burgeoning prepper deserves.

Survival games are always a bit of a mixed bag for me, sometimes getting too hyper-focused on the mundane act of staying alive, other times simply too brutally tough to easily enjoy...

Mr. Prepper doesn’t turn out to be the nuclear catastrophe it initially convinces you it will be. It survives the radioactive onslaught by the skin of it’s dank, burrowed out teeth. There’s something strange in this that can be recommended, but only to those who have a penchant for the suvivalist, resource-management genre. For everyone else, the threat of impending destruction on the surface is likely more preferable to the solitude and depression of the bunker.

Mr. Prepper is a management game where our mission is none other than to create an underground shelter since the protagonist is convinced that a nuclear war is coming and the government wants to prevent us from doing so by stopping us as soon as they suspect any strange activity.

Mr. Prepper fulfils the bunker survival simulator competently. The personal Cold War I was having with the way it controls and the treaties I wanted to break for it being so pedantic – even on the Switch – left a lot to be desired however. If this genre is of interest and you own a Switch you may be able to enjoy what it has to offer, warts and all.

Nintendo Blast

Mr. Prepper might be a fun game on PC, but it's very frustrating on Nintendo Switch. Although the title has some very interesting construction and management elements, the positive points end up being overshadowed by the excess of menus, uninspired graphics and a terrible control cursor.
