Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection Review Summary

StrongCritic Consensus

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection has been praised for bringing together 13 games in a pleasing way, even if not all the games are a hit.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a collection of 13 games. Critics have been praising the collection for the amount of games included in one package at the price point it’s being sold at. Some of the games have been described as being classics, whilst others have been criticised for not being very good, and questioned why they’ve been included. There has been more praise on the collection because of quality of life improvements added, such as the rewind function and save states which have been well received due to the difficulty of the games. The variety on display in the collection has also been noted as a highlight.

Presentation of the collection has been well received and many critics have praised the visuals and the soundtracks of the different games, with extra attention that’s been paid to the menus. The vast array of extras that can be collected has also received widespread praise, items such as box art, TV stills and more can be viewed in the “Turtle Lair” and it’s been noted that the ease of access to these things is a standout feature.

The game features online co-op for some of the games, but not all, and there have been criticisms of the online play not working, but couch co-op has been a hit with the critics. It has also been noted that there are no noticeable bugs with the running of the games.

Many reviewers have praised the feeling of nostalgia the collection evokes, however, some have pointed to this also being an indication of how much enjoyment the player will get out of the collection.

Critic Reviews for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection

TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection is a treasure trove of Turtle games, but our online experience was barely functional when matchmaking. Couch co-op fares a lot better, but some may notice an increased input delay over the originals. All said this is still a great collection for fans.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is an excellent snapshot of gaming in the early 90s, but varies in quality from title to title.

Whether you’re a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or not, the Cowabunga Collection is without a doubt the most impressive gaming compilation there’s ever been. Collecting 13 hard-to-find games with every possible bit of extra content is an incredible effort, and the fact that most of them are still a blast today is just the icing on the cake. The Cowabunga Collection is truly a shellebration of everything TMNT.

One of the best retro compilations ever made… for a collection of games that, despite the nostalgia, really don't deserve the attention.

Impressive efforts with a few noticeable problems holding them back. Won't astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash.

‎Plain and simple, TMNT The Cowabunga Collection is the new benchmark within retro video game compilations. Both for the selection of titles (very wide, with different versions and change of region) and for the enormous amount of extras, an example of preservation. As the turtles would say: this game is a fucking mother.‎

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection is a must for any Turtles fan. The emulation here is flawless and the range of accessibility enhancements is very welcome. In fact, the treasure trove of behind-the-scenes content is worth the asking price alone. Sure, there's a some 'classic' games included that won't live up to nostalgic memories, but ignore the dross and you'll have a blast with the near-essential selection of scrolling beat 'em up TMNT goodness.

If you're a fan of the Turtles, this is the collection for you. If you're a fan of arcade brawlers, this is the collection for you. If you're simply curious about this specific time in gaming history, the Cowabunga Collection is still worth owning. It's a phenomenal piece of work and a reminder of why the Turtles remain such a relevant franchise in video games to this day.
