Critic Reviews for Ever 17: The Out of Infinity
For visual novel fans, or the curious, Ever 17: The Out of Infinity is an absolute must play.
On the surface, Ever 17 – The Out of Infinity tells a compelling story about a group of people in a race to survive an underwater theme park disaster. Dive deeper, though, and you'll find plenty more to discover in this sci-fi visual novel that starts strong and doesn't let up until the end(ings).
Ever 17 is weird. It’s a conventional survival story told in a very unconventional way. Its tone can turn from laid-back to dire on a dime and its traditional gal game structure gives way to some of the most shocking rug pulls you’re likely to find in any piece of fiction. If you can sit through some repetitive text and a lot of typos, you’ll find a truly special experience from one of gaming’s most under-appreciated talents.
One of the genres biggest foundations, Ever 17: The Out of Infinity is a mandatory game for visual novel fans.

Ever 17 – The Out of Infinity is an alternate version for KID's classic mystery, which wasn't released [this way] in the West [yet], bringing significant changes in its structure that can be quite controverse. On one hand, the big mysteries and sci-fi elements are still a big attractive and worth checking out. On the other, it leaves a feeling that the release could have had more care in preserving the original story along with the most recent revision and in offering more quality of life for players.

Ever 17: The Out of Infinity is a great improvement over its predecessor, Never 7, making for a much more memorable experience. It's still nowhere near perfect, but it should still be an enjoyable read for most visual novel fans.
Despite a very slow start and some repetition across its routes, Ever 17 deserves its status as a classic. The occasional typos are unfortunate, but overall this remaster is a great opportunity to experience a clever and inventive visual novel.
[...]the story in Ever 17 - The Out of Infinity still works — we can experience the mystery and emotional weight that permeates the attempts to escape a lethal sinking. However, for those, like me, who have had any contact with the original Ever17, there's a feeling that something essential has been dilluted. The remake definitely is an interesting experience but inevitably inferior to the classic that came before. It leaves only hope that Mages and Spike Chunsoft work together to bring the original version of one of the best sci-fi visual novels ever created.
